I don't want to be a buzz-kill here, but I don't think over-sized should be allowed due to stress on the fish.  I would hate for people in the boats to watch a bunch of kayakers messing with the over-sized for too long.  Besides the regs say they must be immediately released.

Agreed!
I think we should only count legal fish that are harvested. If we were gonna photo oversized, we might as well have the tourney on another day. I think we should make NA the official weigh in location for everyone that participates. All fish at NA should be measured first for length and also weight in case of a tie in length. People should be able to stop in at NA to weigh in at any point during the day. Just my 2 cents

Could not agree more. It's a retention day, why have it open for oversized?

I like the idea of allowing oversized entries.  However, I favor the idea of a picture of the head next to the kayak and a judges review of the largest fish.  It's pretty easy to get a pic of the head next to your kayak without stressing the fish.

I have no problem with people doing a quick measure and photo of smaller ones too.  Last  time no one caught a keeper and an under-size fish won.  Let's hope that is not the case this time, but you never know.

It is like you we reading my mind.  One of the benefits of fishing with other people is that they can take pictures of the head/fish while you unhook it, no stress added.  The judges will determine what sturgeon we think is the largest based on the photos.
Here are the regulations just in case anyone was wondering.

Minimum fork length 38 inches, maximum fork length 54 inches.
All oversize, undersize, and unwanted legal size sturgeon must be immediately released unharmed into the water.
Only one single-point, barbless hook may be used for sturgeon.
Oversize sturgeon cannot be removed totally or in part from the water.

This sounds awesome...
I have my Revo all rigged up and ready to go .
I only know a few good spots down by the rose quarter and near sellwood...
where are folks launching from, George Rogers, Clackamette?

If anyone wants... I have a Trident 13 rigged with an anchor trolley that could be borrowed.
I do not have an extra non-native invasive species permit, but the kayak is just sitting in storage at this point.

A lot of people will be launching from George Rogers but there are a lot of good holes on the Willamette.  Here's a list of some.

Below the Gilbert River on the Multnomah Channel
-Launch from Gilbert River Boat Launch

Portland Harbor
     - Launch from St. Johns or Fred's Marina

Swan Island
     - Launch from Swan Island or St. Johns

Grain Towers
     - Launch from the Eastside Esplanade

Oak's Park Hole and Sellwood Hole
     - Launch from Willamette Park or the public park next to Oak's park

Sellwood Hole
     - launch from Willamette Park or

Elk Rock Island
     - launch from River Villa Park

George Rogers
-Launch from River Villa Park or George Rogers

Hog Island and Cedar Oak
     - Launch from Cedar Oak Boat Ramp

You know, that makes a lot of sense to me too. It really doesn't make sense to have a C&R tourney on a retention day.

Also I'm not trying to neg on this whole thing, but it's kind of lame to have to go to/from Next Adventure to check in, weigh in, BBQ, given that it's nowhere near a boat ramp. I realize it probably makes the overhead for running the tourney significantly lower since you don't have to rent out space at a park, but who wants to check in, drive out and put in, fish for hours, load up, and drive back to Next Adventure?

Don't get me wrong: I think it's awesome someone is doing a tourney. It just seems like there's some rough edges on this thing.

Thank you Spot for posting that.  I'm pretty new to it and have only been off of Rodgers...looks like a bit of scouting is in order.

+ 1 to the C&R on what will probably be the busiest retention day of the decade.

As for the location, Next is actually near the midpoint of the lower Willamette.  There are sure to be people fishing at both ends so it kind of makes sense to have it there.

I wish you could too, that was awesome.  Hopefully you you can make it to the BBQ.

Also, no one is saying you can't retain a legal fish, "This event will be catch and keep for all legally retainable fish and catch, measure, photo, and release for undersize and oversized sturgeon."

I encourage everyone the check-in Friday afternoon, that way you do not have go to a check-in location Saturday morning and then head out to your fishing area.  I will be at the shop from about 3 PM until closing, 7 PM.  We are considering changing the Saturday morning check-in to have 1 at George Rodgers and a second one at a location to be decided, based on where people are fishing.

As an aside, this retention day should be nowhere are hectic as 2 years ago.  The sturgeon season coincides with  with deer,  upland bird, duck and salmon seasons.

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this or not, please move if needed.
My kayak fishing buddy will be out of town during the tournament.  I need to find someone or a group to fish with per the rules and to potentially measure over size fish.   Anyone need another person for the tournament?  My kayak has a pretty decent fish finder and river anchor system.

Which fishing licenses/tag do we need?

Do we need the invasive species permit?
