I did a little sturgeon prospecting with my youngest son on Sunday.  When we got to our launch I realized that I'd only brought 1 paddle. @$#%^&* We considered fishing from the bank but I really wanted to know if the fish were in the honey hole.  As we worked our way to the spot, with me towing Nowell into a stiff headwind, I spotted a good paddling stick and handed the paddle off to the boy.  Let me tell you, it's hard, but not impossible to paddle a kayak with a 6 foot long branch.

Once anchored up, we were pretty immediately into fish.  Several fish in, Nowell sets the hook again.
"He's really running" says the boy
"That's cool. Let him run" I say.
"I can't stop him! he he he he" Nowell cackles
"Let me see your reel" I respond

At this point, I see his spool is nearly showing and the fish is still going strong.
"Hoh Yeah!  You're gonna need to chase this guy" I scream as I throw his anchor line.

As my eleven year old takes off downstream I fumble for the gopro and have to sprint to catch up with him.  By the power and determination I can tell that this is no keeper size fun run.

Fast forward a half hour.  Nowell really puts the wood to the fish to get it over someone's anchor line.  Instead of cheering an 11y/o fighting an oversize from a kayak on, the doucebag yells, "You running mono or tuff line?".  "Tuff line"  I answer, evoking the response "I'll be pretty upset if you cut my anchor line.....".  Seriously?!?!?

anyway

Fast forward another half-hour plus (per the gopro) and over a mile downstream.  The monster finally comes to the surface but refuses to roll over, so I grab Nowell's stern line in my teeth and start dragging him to shore.  Once there, he wrestles his prize into the shallows, gives it a consoling pet, pulls the hook and sends the oversize dino on its way.  That's My Boy!

I'm so glad I didn't let the lack of a 2nd paddle deter us!

Way to go little man! Not surprised though, he has the "super-human fish catching gene" running through his veins like his old man. ;)
