Came across this on NCKA, not sure if it's been posted here before. I thought the stationary bracing was an interesting idea for practice. This guy doesn't have nearly the style points of a Ndogg or Craig, but it's still worth the watch.

Funny, I was reading the same thing on NWCA today and thought that was a great vid as well.

The NorCal boys even gave one of Rawkfish's PC vids some love for his reentry skills.
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

It is indeed a great way to practice bracing.

I missed that earlier, I think I need to take the Rawkfish approach on the bigger days and just paddle in. The sprint like hell approach works but it's pretty hard to brace while pedaling. These videos make me really wish we had Langston's epic landing on go pro from earlier this year at PC.

I think that we all can agree with that.

That is a pretty good video.  I like what the guys at NCKA said though, that surf at La Jolla can be killer!  ::) :D  But seriously, it does provide some really good tips.

I have been playing around with different techniques over the last couple of years and I've come to the conclusion that my game plan for transiting the surf zone depends on the day and the location.  On smaller days I may try to have some fun and surf a wave in.  On bigger days I look at it as more of a multi-stage process.  I'm getting to the point where I feel like there is no simple explanation I can give on how to get through the surf upright.  I feel like I need to just sit down and write a book on it so I can hand it out whenever someone asks me.   ::)

The one thing I can say for certain about getting through the surf successfully is that there is no substitute for practice.

I prefer to pedal in lay as flat as I can to the boat and use the rudder to keep the boat straight. However the safest route is always to come in backwards.
I have never hulied a full boat, however I always put everything away before landing because my time is over due.

Those are some good tips but coming in upright is overrated.  Some of my funnest times in the surf are when I dump and have to ride the stern in.

I grew up in San Diego, and launching / landing a kayak from that beach for 25 years. Trust me when I tell you the water is a lot softer down there than it is up here. Maybe warm water molecules are further apart than cold water molecules  ;D. Sure it's a great place to learn to surf a kayak, when you flip it feels like falling into a pile of feathers compared to our water that feels more like ice cold concrete. Somebody should make a how-to video land a kayak in our surf, where failure has steeper consequences. Our fellow kayak fisherfolk in the southland have a pretty soft environment. - Just saying

I love launching and landing on big days, though I have stopped saying hi to the surfers before heading to the beach..... Usually not the best spot to pick for landings.

I'm a fan of back paddle over the last wave you can then go for broke and paddle like hell. When the next one picks you up brace hard and get ready to pop out if you start getting too sideways.

I've been working on getting some footage that would work for this.  Some day I'll get the right stuff and put it together for a "Northwest Style" how-to for the surf.

For the record, I'd like it known that fishing kayaks do not ride well in the barrel....  The hang time as you get sucked over with the lip is amazing though, and your friends will be greatly entertained, eh kykfshr?

... I really should buy a helmet one of these days
