Anybody want to let the "new guys" in on what you're talking about? I read the NCKA post, apparently some kind of tourney?

It's like high school around here with the 20% core group and the 80% outsiders...

GS8 stands for Gimme Shelter 8.  It's the 8th year of this event held in Shelter Cove, CA.  GS is one of the largest, if not THE largest, kayak fishing tournaments on the West Coast with about 200 kayak anglers and their families attending last year.  It is also a great overall event to fish, hang out, meet a lot of like minded individuals, and eat about as much outstanding food as you can pack in your stomach.  The fishing is first rate with lots of big lings, rockfish, and cabezon ... with the possibility at salmon and pacific halibut as well.

The top 3 tournaments on the West Coast would be, well, Oregon Rockfish Class has to be up there, but so is Gimme Shelter and so is the Albion event.  We have a number of members that make the pilgrimage down to CA for either/both Gimme Shelter and Albion.

Thank you, that's very helpful! Sounds awesome, I'll have to look at the timing. I think I'll be in Kauai. Good problem to have  ;D

Really interesting regarding the sponsorship aspect. On the one hand I could see that could rub some people the wrong way (might feel exclusionary), but on the other hand I personally really like it. It gives us all a bad rep if someone is making a scene at the campground or being irresponsible on the water. It's one thing for a small event of a couple dozen people, but when you're talking several hundred it makes sense to grow it with a "member in good standing" requirement.

Edit: Here is the quote from the thread at NCKA:

Quote
All the details for registration will come out in a thread here in very early January.  It's not hard to get a sponsor.  All you need is someone who has attended in the past who will vouch for your character and agree to intervene if you are involved in any kind of dispute, altercation or other conflict.  It's based on an issue that came up at GS6 where someone was too drunk and caused a scene and then the next day ended up getting in too close to the reef requiring help from other members, one of which endo'd and lost a bunch of gear due to it.  The perp bailed the scene and left the Cove early.  Later online here he was called out, nearly lynched, given a chance to apologize, brought what many considered weak sauce, and was banished....

Anyway, just having the sponsorship program seems to be enough of a reminder to all that we're representing each other to some extent, so there is definitely an air of love and cooperation at the event, in the campground, OTW, on the beach...etc., and the sponsorship program will go on as a symbol of our commitment to treat each other and others around our group with patience and respect at all times.  Thx

Dammit, wish I was back there. In Colorado Springs for the rest of the year it looks like.

Anyone know of a firm looking for a mobile/ onboard networking tech? Im tired of being gone all the time.

And that's Eggzackly why there's now a sponsorship requirement... One or two bad apples, etc, ad nauseum..., so, yeah, you hit it dead on . I'd been to a different tourney in a different state, and saw something similar happen. Now, there are zero invites extended to outsiders. Too bad, had something like this been in place, we'd still be welcome there.

my remaining $.04 ; If you can do it, go. you won't regret it.

Hey!  Thank you, Craig, for posting this up back in December - I'd meant to put something on here and just spaced it.

I only advertise the tourney lightly on Facebook / Lost Coast Kayak Anglers, and everything is based at NCKA, but I'm definitely always stoked to welcome NWKA Brothers - I consider you guys equal to us members of the Madness farther to the south. We family.  :)

100 are signed up so far, and registration closes on tax day.

Looking forward to seeing you guys and meeting some new people too.

Eric

You betcha Eric.

I would have made lasts years event, but did a long ass full summer road trip east and south with the family and couldn't swing the time or fundage to accomplish both trips.

If you ever get the change to slay ride a huge Bull Redfish down in the Gulf..... DO IT!

I need to turn in my registration but I'm getting geared up and ready for GS8. I'm curious at the number of NWKA members that are planning on attending. Who is going?!

I'd like to go but it's just too far for me.  It would almost be easier to fly down and borrow a kayak.
