Not so fast...

Mechanical engineers are well versed in rigid body motions and fluid mechanics.

Electrical Engineers are well versed in dealing with very small things.

1000x magnification does not actually make them any bigger.

Blues normally stay much further off shore than that, or so I though.  They are considered a pelagic species.

It's not unheard of for blues to come in nearshore.

-Allem

Not unheard of is differnet from commonplace.

E.g. It's not unheard of for an engineer to get laid.  It's just not a common event.

Blues are extremely common nearshore.  There used to be guys targeting them regularly just out from the columbia.  Fishing 200yds offshore this summer, I watched one roll on the surface between Rawkfish and I while he was hooked up to a fat Chinook.   For some reason, Rawky didn't find that as funny as I did at the time.   :evil4:

Learn something new every day.  I'd always thought of them (and seen them referred to in literature) as primarily offshore sharks.

Yeah, I would say they are more on the common side.  I've even caught one surf fishing for perch.

-Allen

I've caught one just at the Bar in Tillamook bay.

Until someone finds a way to change the silhouette of a kayak, not much will change by way of surprise attacks from below. Has anyone heard of an attack from below on a boat??? Not too likely. Kayaks just match the visual description of their main prey, seals, sea lions, elephant seals and whale calves. Shark shields need to work a broader range/depth I think to avert a 1200lb apex on an ambush attack, but still probably the best deterrent so far. Just my .02 for what it's worth.

I don't know if this has been brought up but sharks are attracted to electrical impulses, lights, banging noises, not to mention blood. I wonder if a F.F giving off some sort of electrical impulse through the water might attract one to a kayak? I would think the combination of the shape of a kayak, banging equipment in the yak, and the electrical impulse given off from the F.F. would increase the chances of a shark coming to check you out...Just a couple of thoughts. I know that if I was fishing in Hawaii or somewhere hot, my legs would not be dangling overboard and whatever fish I caught would be bled and out of the water ASAP.

It doesn't help that we look like floating whale carcasses, a common food of sharks.

I had my legs dangling in the water when I had my encounter with a GWS. My FF was not working at that time but I did have fish bleeding in my tank well. Oh yeah, and I had been throwing herring heads in the water that weren't being used for bait. The dude checked me out and followed me for a while. There was plenty of opportunity for my legs to be removed from my body. I'm happy I got to keep my legs...I'm not really interested in a paddle kayak.

That is pretty clear proof that sharks know a kayak isn't food. In this case it looks kinda like food, makes noise kinda like food, smells kinda like food and yet he still decided it wasn't food.
Don't worry about sharks while on your yak in the PNW .... If they wanted to eat you they would have.
If you are worried about dying you should be much more afraid of your drive to the ocean rather than being eaten by what lives in the ocean.

That is some solid advice. I have to admit that I still get a little nervous...but once the fishing picks up I tend forget sharks even exist. There's no sense worrying about something you have no control over.
