Here's what I caught out of our canoe, on Discovery Bay, on Sunday. It's a flatfish!
Too bad it's not listed for AOTY >:( I'd have it locked up, the way everybody else is fishing. >:D

It's a good thing we dug a bunch of clams during the low tide, earlier. The big ones ended up in clam fritters and the little ones in a pot of cioppino, with the starry flounder. An arbitrary picture of the kitchen carnage.

Very nice on the flounder there Bill. Discovery bay must have been some what calmer I bet. I think you should be able to claim that on the AOTY board, cause I tell ya what I have never picked one up, and I would love to. I was told to go to Matsmats bay for flounder.
UUuuummmmmm. love the spicey ciopinno. there is another dish like that made the same way but with a white sauce. I can't remember the name, but I had down in San Diego once.
I am really surprised that more people dont clam over here. I went out 3 days in arow and never saw anyone except for the guys I took with me. And we claimed limits in no time. I am starting to like the little necks and manilas better then the butters only cause they clean up better with no grit. did you get any oysters too? Next time your over drop me a line if you would like someone to fish with.

Nice one PS!! Nothing better than a mixed bag for a sea fare dinner! Yeah, we'll have to see from the judges if that flounder is valid for AOTY. and the judges say....

Maybe we/I should lobby for any flatfish being eligible, under halibut entries. ;D

So I'll put it to a vote to the people.  However, in this case, if even 1 person that is registered for AOTY says no, then it is easier to just say no.  If you vote no and are registered for AOTY, send me a PM so I know you're a no.

For me, I guess it depends on the availability of flounders in Oregon.  From what I hear Puget Sound is full of them. Then again if we keep the halibut's 3.5 pts/in a 14 inch flounder is worth a whopping 49 pts.   I tell you what, if I can count undersized sturgeon for points (until I finally catch a keeper) you have a deal.

There are lots of flounder to be had in Oregon. You'll find them in most of the bays both north and south.

Personally, I'd like to see them added.  It wouldn't have a huge impact on people's overall scores but it would give them a better chance at marking another species.  Also, I'm sure that there are some in the AOTY pool who aren't comfortable with the thought of paddling a mile offshore much less to do battle with a fish that could potentially kill them.

Seems to me that omitting flounder and sole is like omitting bluegill from the panfish category.  It probably won't have an impact on who wins but it may be some people's only chance at that category.

I'm with Spot 100% on this one.  I'm not eligible to vote this year, but I'd sure like it to count for next year.  It's certainly an easy species, but not worth very many points in the halibut column.  I see it as a nice way to blunt the sharpness of a VERY tough species category.  One more nudge to get people out to fish.  Isn't that what the AOTY is all about any way?

If this is added as a category to this years AOTY, I still don't think that PS's recent flounder should count.  It wasn't part of the rules at the time that it was caught.  To me it would be the same as catching a nice specimen of any particular species, and then deciding after the fact that maybe I just DO want to enter the fray, now that I have a nice piece of catchup in the net.  Sorry PS, I gotta call 'em as I see 'em.  Besides, it shouldn't be any big trick for a seasoned pro like you to get another one, just like the other one.

I'm not in AOTY, as, well, I simply can't fish worth a tournament.  At this point, I couldn't fish to save my life.  ;)

But really, why is this even a question?  It goes against rule number one.

Hah!  We've traditionally extended derby privileges to all human powered watercraft.  Gotta write our rules out better I suppose.
