I think there is some merit to theses systems. I think the screen is an expensive part of all units (FF, camera, etc) that integrating one has at least some merit.

I just ordered one of these:

http://vexilar.com/products/index.php?prodCat=marine&prodSubCat=fishphone

They also have a unit for a sonar but I will stick to my cheapo Pirahana max 180 for now:

Unfortunately I can see one day, having a 60" LED tv that's been waterproofed and mounted on the bow!  lol.  A perfect application perhaps for the google glass type technology.  Say "sonar" you get sonar, say camera, you get the underwater camera.  That'd be cool.

I am hoping primarily it it used for on board the kayak.  What I want to accomplish with it this year is to get a decent halibut bite on film inches away from the camera.  Also to video the cohos in Valdez if they are as thick as they have been in past years.  Unless i limit out in a hurry, I don't anticipate use on kings.  They are just too hard to come by and the evidence I have read and heard about from other folks is that the cameras do drop the strike rate significantly.

I am also looking into mounting it in such a way that I can slow cruise rocky shorelines and see what I can find.  Specifically looking for Octopus in this case.  It also has lights so I am hoping to see what I can attract with some power underwater lights and film it if at all possible.  Like Kayak fishing, night time fishing is virtually unheard of here in Alaska...partly because we have no night time in the summer!  So more fun kayaking stuff!  Ice fishing is a secondary adventure!

I'm kindof surprised there isn't a quality product that uses a phone or tablet as the FF head (or is there)?

I end up using my iphone on the water (navionics) all the time. For me, there's no good reason to have a totally separate, expensive unit that only offers the additional benefit connectivity to a transducer.  Everything else can be done better on a smartphone/tablet I'd be willing to bet that ff heads will be a thing of the past very soon. Well, hopefully anyway.

Yeah this was my same thinking Rory.  By nature I'm a run toward not from progress kind of guy.
They sell a waterproof phone case and a thing to hang it around your neck or there's a mount to mount your phone on your rod so your hands are free.   I don't know maybe it's just me but I don't really see the whole water on phone thing being as issue.. I already use a waterproof case for my phone when I'm out and it works fine for me.

Even with water on the screen?

One thing not discussed yet is that Bluetooth is not a really good standard for a lot of data transfer. It might be okay for one data source at a time, but pairing a fishfinder, GPS and video is way out of bounds for Bluetooth. Your generic wifi 802.11g allows for much higher bandwidth, has a lot of cheap transmitters and is supported by almost all devices with a screen maid after 2008. You would even be able to share data to multiple screens or users for a single source. Leave the Bluetooth for a wireless trackball instead of touch screen for a wet environment.
Relax. You'll live longer.

I know i posted it somewhere here but so far the underwater camera is working pretty well.  It's not going to replace my gopro because it shoots in 240p but my ipad lasted all day (6 hours) and still had 50% juice.  My ultimate goal I think a few years out is to integrate this technology PLUS the fishfinder technology into something like google glass.

Currently it looks much better when actually watching the ipad then watching the recording it takes. The cool thin is anyone with wireless receiving smartphone or tablet as long as they have the wifi password can watch as well.

Would recommend NOT maximizing to full screen when watching the video.
