I've tried it and it's not easy.  You have to find a place where the surf zone is relatively narrow and predictable.  You can do the math on how many locations around the OR and WA coast fit into that category.   ::)

Good luck everyone this 2014, I didn't get much fishing done last year, But I have found the Umpqua river has some great place's to get surf perch , and some are easy even when the Ocean is ruff. others are a bit of a paddle and you want to work the currents to your advantage..

This page will help with perch in the bays. Stoked to try my hand at them. So tasty...

I got my biggest on the lee side of Tatoosh Island last year. Far away from the surf zone. The real problem is getting there...miles and miles from a suitable launch.  But you don't need a surf zone to get them.

It's been awhile. But when I lived in WA I was told you could catch giant one under the John River bridge near Westport.  Not so much a tip on the specific location since I never fished it but like said above, surf perch aren't always apparently found in surf. Maybe some of the locals can chime in....if it's not super secret location. If so...oops...sorry. Lol.

Pogie's or what (around here) we call piling perch, as seen with the blue stripes, are more likely to be found near structures like dock pilings, rocks etc. Usually I caught them at the docks when high tide rolls in. They seem to be a deeper water perch than the redtail surf perch, which I catch in the surf.
Redtails are fun and easy to get from the Yak, after a morning of no fish biting while out for blacks and ling,s....we watched an Osprey and it's mate pulling surf perch out of the small breakers, we decided to give it a try, very fun day!
A bit scary though when the Osprey dive within 10' of the Yak....they make a big splash!

I was thinking about this too. It would be fun to try on a spring day when the Surf is flat. I have caught striped bass and seen a steelhead caught while fishing from the beach. I bet you would end up catching more than a perch if the stars were aligned right.

The rock gardens just south of Cape Flattery is a potential spot. There's a beach there and they are definitely curious enough to swim around the kayaks. That spot is kind of a drive for you down in Oregon though. All you need is a good spot like previously mentioned.

That's a great site but I've had mixed results when trying to follow their advice - buyer beware. At least it's a starting point for what worked for someone else.
