I think we should add dog fish since there aren't any available shark species. It is a great fish for new anglers, fights well on light tackle and are good table fare. It is better than giving points to a poor quality bycatch fish.

99% of the Alaskan contingency will not have access to Dungeness Crab.  That's a southeast thing.  The only species we have a crack at really is Northern Pike.  If you didn't indue the tiger muskies found in PNW, I think that's almost too large an advantage for Alaskans.  Especially since Pike do get longer unlike other fish that seem to max out at a certain length and get fatter.

Weird.  We had tons of dungies around Kodiak.  I thought it would be the same in PWS.

Lots of pike in Eastern Washington.  If they make it over a few more dams it could be an eco disaster for the Columbia River.

No bridge lip sucker chowder or squawfish fritters for you?  You're missing out. ;)

I almost put dogfish on the poll.

WDFW has been aggressive in removal of pike in WA and are apparently having good success. I've heard its not nearly as easy to catch pike in WA waters as it used to be.

If we are going to add dogfish I would strongly encourage c&r or release of females. Dogfish populations have crashed in WA waters in the past two decades due to over harvest. They have very low reproductive potential and have a very long gestation period (2 years!). At least they are easy to sex.

When I was kid in the 70's we'd catch them right off the Homer spit...no more.  Cod and the sea otters have hammered them back to the point there is no season.

I witnessed part of that pike Eco disaster today ice fishing in Big Lake which is connected to the Susitna river system. Got it on video but couldn't connect.

Here's a poor quality video since the vexilar fishphone isn't very good in lowlight conditions and it shoots in 240p. But it saved my neck and back peering down the hole all day!

My iPad worked great. Picture is better on iPad while fishing than video.  Slow day but semi entertaining!

Maybe "other trout" category.  Alaskans could go for char the rest can go for brown trout since Bull trout (similar to char) are untouchable in PNW...I think.

We can keep dollys in some rivers in WA.  Mostly on the west side.  East side I think the bull/dolly trout are C&R only.

I'm pretty sure FG is being sarcastic (generally an accurate assumption), at least about the good table fare aspect.  USP, though, I'm not so sure about.  From what I hear the dogfish shark population is not in any trouble, so I'm not sure why you say their population has crashed.

Oooo....I'm taking a chance agreeing with funngunnin here, lol, but I've had some really good dogfish. They aren't my number one preference. But bled and gutted immediately and put on ice they are a lot like swordfish. I keep them to eat now.  In England, the dogfish used to be a primary staple of the fish and chips. Flavor is stronger than halibut or cod, but they aren't bad at all.

My recollection of trying to eat dogfish is not a pleasant one.

Interesting results so far.  Almost 83% voting for a 25th group and I wouldn't have guessed pikeminnow as the front runner.

Looking at the AOTY rules page for 2014 it says 25 groups but only lists 24.  Is the 25 right and a group has yet to be added?  >:D

Anywhere around here that has Brown trout has them as being protected.

I think we have enough Saltwater fish on the list.  Removing a Fresh water fish and adding another Saltwater fish just makes it more difficult for us inland people to compete.

Please consider the few of us that don't live within an hr of the coast.

I might ask a different question ... what 4 species would you take off the list to bring it back down to 20?
