Had a few hours after work yesterday so check the tides etc. and it was pretty much all lined up so made a break for it. Got to the harbor, ready to unload when I realized I forgot my WheelEz... :angry3: Went back home picked it up and launched. Super high tide and really nice water conditions. Bait was jumping and overall had a good fishy feeling to it. Strapped on a Trix Jetty worm and got to work. Third cast.. BAM! Nice little fight which turned out to be a scrappy 17" underling. Beauty of a little guy so took a pic.

Kept casting and hooked up w/ brown rockfish left and right. Must have caught about 30 of 'em. All were in the 10-11" range so all went back to fatten up. C&R'd 4 more underlings and then the darkness made me go in @ about 9. Not bad for an afterwork outing. Nothing stellar but "catching" is always fun!

The Trix jetty worm. Nice little bugger from SoCal.

Yeah Z, I noticed, riding my bike home from work yesterday how high the tide was and calm the water too.  Wish'd I coulda been doing the same down Elliot Bay.

You throwing those pretty jigs with a light spinning outfit or what?

Actually used my steelhead rod w/ bait casting reel. There are some big lings and Cabbies in those jetties and I want something w/ a backbone that could pull them out of their little caves.

Hey Z,

Those Jetty Worms look great!  Can I get them locally, or is it an internet only kinda thing?

Nice report Z!  Kinda scares me that you didn't even bother with taking points for the rockfish.....  What do you have up yer sleeve boy? ???

Those jetty worms are like so 80's.  How much hair spray did you use on them?
Like Fishin-T said, are they available locally?

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain

Yeah man.. WATCH OUT!! >:D

Well the ling was too small to post as per the rules. They need to be of legal size and the limit is 26" so a no go.

It's pretty cool, he makes 'em all by hand. And sorry T, since he makes 'em at pretty low volume they only sell on the net. There's a huge following in SoCal. Could be worth it T. ;)

You could probably make these pretty easily.  The jig head is a football shape.  Put a spinnerbait skirt on, then a rubber worm of your choice and you're good to go.

I'm a big fan of skirts on jig/worm setups.  I believe it give the presentation a "fuller" look and a bit of contrast.  Outdoor Emporium carries some skirt types in their salt water worm section for larger jig/skirt/worm combos.  I've also also slid larger hootchies or tubes over the jig head with a worm on the hook.  Be creative.  It's fun.

I was looking to see if I had any pics of some of my larger creations.  Didn't find any, but did find this.

That's a 2 ounce spear head jig with a mini B2 glow squid (with the head snipped back) and a blue/green crawfish.

Some bass plastics come ready made with a more full presentation.  Here's a Yamamoto Kreature.

These pics were taken a couple years ago when deep jigging on Lake Chelan macks and both of them caught fish.  However, I used the same setups in the salt with good success.  Bass plastics are softer and don't last as long, but they are also come in bulk and are cheaper that way.  I really like the kreatures when fishing the kelp beds.  I wish they came in larger sizes for ling fishing, although the smaller ones work pretty good themselves.

Hey guys-- I have never built my own lures or jigs.  But putting some of these together and testing them out looks like it could be a lot of fun for not a whole lot of $$.  Thanks for the idea ;) ;D

Making your own gear is fun but don't expect to save cash doing it. With all my home made creations trying to find combos that work I've spent plenty.  ::)

I can see that happening really easily.  I followed your link and you can get some of his jigs for just over about $3.  I looked on the web for some of those weedless football jigs to start from and they go for more than $4 each.

My problem with his web-site is that he shows all of the colors, but then when you want to order a package of combinations (like maybe the "kelp killer" package) you don't get to see what colors or body types that you'll get.  I'll try to get him to send me a brochure or something.
