Hey guys, I'm at a loss here. I recorded some steelhead fishing yesterday with my GoPro Silver in 1080p. I edited the footage down to a couple of minutes with Movie Maker for Windows 8. When I upload to Youtube it plays in 360p. I had it up to 480p on one of my attempts. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. It's getting a little frustrating to say the least.

WTF haha. No it plays in 1080p. I just watched it before posting the link...when I click on the link it plays in 1080p. I have no idea what I did.

I think YouTube automatically will put it in 360p for faster loading times (based on past experience with watching youtube videos).  If you go over to the "gear" symbol you can go up to HD settings.  It may take longer to load, but quality is much improved.

Yeah, I have uploaded the video about a dozen times and the highest resolution I could choose was 480p. I think I figured out the problem. On Movie Maker I checked the details of the footage and it was defaulting much lower than 1080p...I simply customized the resolution and tried one last upload to Youtube. At first I couldn't go any higher than 360p...when I clicked the link it finally gave the option for the highest resolution.

Yep you got it. I don't use that software but most video editing software has templates with options for output quality and resolution. Glad you figured it out.

What do you use? I don't really like the layout of the GoPro software. Movie Maker is pretty user friendly but that minor hiccup had me pulling my hair out. I went to bed angry. I woke up this morning and figured it out right away.

I recently got a GoPro and had the same problem initially; I couldn't upload in 1080p. The software end of things was the toughest for me to get dialed in. I also didn't like the GoPro software.

I have access to Adobe Premiere Pro at work, and it has the above mentioned templates, one of which is specifically for YouTube. Premiere Pro is definitely far more technical than what I needed, and it took a bit for me to figure out, but it does what I want now pretty seamlessly. It's expensive if you're stuck buying it yourself though.

Just make sure you mount your camera on a really long pole for those Great White close-ups.

It also takes a little while for Youtube to fully process your video before it can be played in its full 1080p glory.  This usually takes about half hour but can take longer.

I have been using Adobe Premiere Pro for a while and I am pretty happy with it.  I had to spend a little while on tutorial videos figuring out how to use it but once you get the hang of it you realize that there is a ton of helpful functions in it.  You can find it pretty cheap if you look around.  The lowest price I've seen it for was $10 but that was during Black Friday deals.

In my limited experience with consumer/prosumer video editing tools they all share a lot of similar characteristics with mostly arbitrary differences, so what works best for someone probably has more to do with your experience with it than which one you choose. Any sufficiently capable video editing software is necessarily complicated, unfortunately.

I've been using various offerings from Sony's line of audio and video editing software for about 13 years and it works for me. Over the same span of time I've tried various simpler software aimed at first timers, some open-source tools, and a revision or two of Adobe's tools. Right now I'm using Sony Movie Studio Platinum Suite 12. You can get it on Amazon for about $55.

It includes a lot of pretty cool stuff and is very usable right out of the box, but that's easy for me to say because the interface hasn't changed a lot in the last decade. If you're familiar with non-linear editors in general it shouldn't be too hard to pick up the basics, and for the rest just go to Google Academy.

I also like the Adobe line pretty well, I've just favored the Sony products over time, but there's stuff I like/hate about both.

Thanks for all the tips, guys. I think Movie Maker will work just fine. I like that it was free  :)
