I too would like to see a different scoring format that would require more skill.  Granted, that actually makes it less likely for me to do well... but, it seems that the prizes and the bragging rights should correspond to some kind of skill level.  As far as the cost of entry... you beer drinking more than get your money back. :)  What does bum me out a little though is when a "pro" wins and then just sells the kayak... I don't even begin to have any ideas to address that issue.

IMO that doesn't change much. The 10# 25" cab still takes a higher overall rating over a 25" rockfish or 20" greenling. Your essentially giving consolation prizes for catching a bigger fish that just doesn't weigh as much because of it's flavor. An 8# rockfish is a far more impressive fish than a 10# cab.

Interestingly, under AOTY points, the 25" cab and 25" rockfish would have the same score.  Both are 8 points per inch.

Damn...You spoiled my argument! :P  That's a scoring flaw I overlooked

I could be wrong, but I think the points are set up the way they are in part due to the particularly large examples available to the Alaska contingent (and travellers to AK).  You can retain some pretty big rockfish up there, including Canary and Yellow Eye.  Same reason lings are only 5 points per inch.  Several 40"+ lings have been caught by members up there.

I have seen far more 40" lings caught in WA from a kayak than I have in AK. You just have to put in the time.

Ahhh.. the 2014 ORC.  I can't speak for ndogg, but you know what I miss most about it...our scales.  If you happen to find a couple Berkley digital scales, let me know.

I'm just really grateful of all the hard work people put into this event!  And, if I ever win I'd hope people don't pass judgement on what I do with the prize.

How about having the ORC (Oregon Rockfish Classic) be structured to catch the heaviest "Rockfish".

The heaviest "Rockfish" (excluding Ling or Cabezon) wins the grand prize.

Then the next 5 heaviest overall fish (all Rockfish, Ling and Cabezon included) win prizes 2nd-6th.

And to up the skill level, only Barbie (kiddie) poles can be used.   >:D

Oh, and a side benefit, we don't have to wait for Cabby season to open up to pull off an ORC.  :icon_thumright:

There, fixed it.

Oh, and there was chatter a few years ago regarding ditching the Potluck in favor of catered BBQ or something along those lines.

Figured out a way to pay for the BBQ.

ORC general fund to foot the bill up front for catered BBQ and all the hardware needed.

When you register for the ORC, you also have the option to prepay for ticket(s) to eat.  The actual cost could be say somewhere like $8-$12 per person (kids under 16 eat free).   Tickets also are sold during ORC, right up till the BBQ runs out of food, or it is time to shut down.   If you don't provide a ticket, you fend for yourself.

All ticket sales go back to the ORC general fund.

Now, to keep it easy...  When you prepay for ticket(s) you would get a confirmation number and added to a master list (held by whomever is taking in the ORC funds).  During ORC, you check in with the ticket sales person (booth) and they verify you have prepaid and they hand you your tickets.

I'm torn on that idea.  Even if I was on tap again for running the taco feed I'm not sure that I'd be on board with that.  The taco feed to me is such an integral part of ORC.  I love the variety of foods brought by various folks.

Any chance of changing the format to something different that largest only?

+1

I'd like to see it more like aoty mutiple speices with points per inch.  If you wanted to you could do a catch and release with pictures and bonus points for cnr.
There's already a contest like that  ;)
Yes there is but that doesn't mean another tournament can't use the same criteria.
You mean copycat the other one?

It was the largest tournament before it became a Hobie Worlds qualifier. That just pushed the numbers even higher.
I completely agree if the winner is going to represent the PNW there should be some skill invloved.

Additionally I would love to see an official power boat helping to organize things during fishing hours. With the size this is growing into I would hate to have a run in with a power boat and kayakers who may have drifted into the cannel.
I agree with both these points. Sending a newb to the Hobie World Qualifier doesn't make much sense to me. I also sometimes wonder how many folks caught their winning fish in the deep hole in the channel.

I don't mind a newb winning a kayak. I enjoy that more than a well established contestant winning one & selling it. That happens a lot in those other big contests. They're still fun though.

I think Mark might be on to something with his ideas.

One possible way to tweak the tournament without breaking it would be to assign the Grand Prize to the largest fish of the day but award the 2nd, 3rd etc prizes for the largest fish of each of the other species.

With this format, the salt newb would still have the same chance at 1st place overall but they'd also have a shot at 1st place for other species.  If you don't cap people at one prize, one person could sweep all the species, which could be good or could be bad depending on your perspective.

To seperate the men from the boys, you could award Trophies for 1st thru Xth based on total species value but award prizes based on size/species.  That still keeps the newbs in the running for 1st place but gives the seasoned guys a more advanced target (Hobby World Tournament entry for example).

Lol ... I hate to break it to you but the 20 people that show up at Sunset aren't the only souls on earth doing a largest bag/most points style tournament.

Sounds like ORC committee doesn't want any new volunteers with new ideas.
