So who wants to help out?

Sure. What needs to be done?

I was thinking about the site for the tourney.
I have two suggestions:  Pacific city surf is pretty good most of the time due to
the gentle slope of the beach.
Suggestion 1.  Why not get someone with a dory to load and carry 2 or 3 boats
out over the surf?  I am sure that a dory fisherman can be had for a few bucks
each time.  Sure beats buying new stuff to replace that lost or broken.
Suggestion 2.  Think about using Depot Bay as the starting point.  No surf problem
there.
I had a daughter fall into the strait once, lucky the Coast Guard was leaving on a
routine patrol and fished her out.
Just to put in my cheap 2 cents.

LoneJack, I really like your suggestion 1.  As a newbie, I'm really hesitant about launching in the surf, if we could get some sort of boat launching assistance then I think I would be able to participate in the derby for sure =)

I'm still pretty new to the Oregon Coast. How much farther is Depoe Bay?  It looks like maybe another hour from Pacific City, but I imagine that for those of us coming form I-5 we wouldn't have to go to Pacific City first.  How about the camping opportunities out there?

If it's that much safer, the window of possible fishing that much better, and if there are more potential places to camp then maybe we should consider it.  It sure does look 'fishy'.

I think we'll take launching through the surf pretty conservative so that everyone can get out there. I'd bet there's places that are easy to launch and places that are a real challenge. On the night before or morning of the tourney we can look over the spots and ask the locals (Spot etc.) where they think the easiest and fishiest spot is to launch and decide accordingly.

I just came back from 5 days in Charleston (just South of Coos Bay), where I got to meet the two Coos Bay Roy's as well as not 1, but TWO other kayak anglers, all by happenstance.

I'm here to tell you, folks, Sunset Bay is a kayak anglers paradise.  You could not ask for an easier, more sheltered launch into the Pacific, as well as decent crabbing and fishing (I managed to catch one greenling inside the bay, despite using what I found out later was the worlds worst jig color for that part of Oregon).

For folks spooked by surf launches, it is the perfect alternative.  Think Depoe but smaller, with a sandy beach, no development, and very very few power boats (I only saw one skiff launch from there in two days of fishing).

So ... Pacific City Sept 20-21.

Some of you guys were asking about helping out.  Can someone do some legwork on a place to stay?
