Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain

This is the second rescue mission my Outback has been on. I'm glad it has turned out well so far.

Here's the video. I should have added some captions to explain what was going on. I might end up doing that later. This video shows my pedaling toward Justin once I could see that the kid wasn't going to make it back to the north end of the bridge. You can barely see Justin swooping in for the assist. I didn't get any footage of the kid hopping up on the bow of the Outback but it still makes me chuckle when play that scene back.

I've towed a lot of swimming kayakers to shore when whitewater kayaking.  If the swimmer floats vertically in the water while hanging onto the stern of your kayak, it's really hard to move them.  You need to tell them to kick their feet so they float as horizontally as possible, and provide a bit of assistance in moving towards shore.  Even when the swimmer is in that position you may have to paddle your guts out to get them into an eddy by the shore.  Some kayakers tell the swimmer to pull his or her chest up on the back deck of the kayak to reduce the swimmer's drag, but I'm not a fan of that position, as the swimmer's weight makes your kayak unstable. The last thing you want is to get dumped over in whitewater while providing swimmer assistance and end up with a scared beginner trying to climb on the bottom of your kayak.

I've never seen a rescue before where the swimmer was wrapped around the nose of the kayak, or sitting on the nose of the kayak.  Great work saving that kid's butt, guys!  And even better, you got it on video!

With the mirage drive being our best bet on making headway, I wasn't about to have him extend his legs. I told him several times to keep his feet on the yak till he could catch his breath and get on. I actually asked him to get on the back but he jumped on front and it was stable enough that I felt comfortable. He nearly caught a pedal or 2 to the back but he figured that out pretty quickly.

Speaking of the Mirage Drive...We had a hell of a time getting it out of the drive well when we got back to the launch. I think the pressure torqued the pins down and that's what made it so hard to free the drive.

I didn't realize the outback could be used as a tandem. Looks...pretty interesting  :D.
I'm editing the video now. I'm considering a director's cut of the whole unedited sitation played in double time with "Yakety Sax" playing through out.
Yakety Sax would go good.

Good job staying dry during that. Must have been difficult to get him up there. Again, good job guys.
