I'm getting a little bit antzy with all this nice warm spring weather we're having.  I was checking the tides and the weekend of May 10th has some low tides.  Is this too early to look for some halibut or kings around Anchor point or somewhere on the Kenai Pen.?    What do you guys think?

Earliest I've caught halibut is May 4  -- so not too soon. If the weather holds up, I'm going out from Deep Creek on Tuesday or Wednesday. I'll report after that. This weather has me antsy too -- but I'm still rehabbing a knee so keeping myself in check.

I've got an invitation to Cordova during the last 2 weeks of May. Any fishing recommendations between Valdez and Cordova around then?

I've caught halibut last week of April. In 2011, I or my partner caught kings may 7 and 15. We also caught halibut. Intel is everything is early with hooligan already a major food/bait source so I'd think it's fishsble. It's never hot fishing but they are there first week of May. My 4wd is out. Blew an engine. So debating my options. Depending in the road to whiskey a Gulch, I may just launch out of Deep Creek or Anchor Point. The closures around the rivers means better planning is required but shouldn't be too big of a deal.

Pretty soon here I bet you could drift the middle Kenai river. Akfishergal sounded like she had a good time on the upper. It's not meat fishing but it can be fun.

thinking of hitting whiskey gulch, possibly homer spit to fish the deeper water by the green buoy tuesday thru friday. Fish the afternoon High tide, because of the clam tides, will try to pick up some clams if we camp at Whiskey. The wind and forecast at this time look good. Just have to remember to bring a drift sock and take your time. Good luck and have a good one!

The king fishing by the can and right up against the condos is by far better as the tide is falling. But if you have a line in the water, especially for butts it's ALWAYS a good time!!! Good luck, be safe and tell us how you did!!!!!!

Well, no fish but didn't do to much fishing. We camped the first night at whiskey gulch after getting there at 9 pm. Tried out my homemade kayak, 15' 32'' wide, Called a Wadefish designed by Jem Watercraft. It was a definite success on the kayak. Woke up at 9ish in the morning, went clamming for 4 hours, cleaned clams and then went to Homer at 4 pm. Was planning on fishing there but the wind picked up, so headed back to WG, made dinner and ended up just taking a walk on the beach. Woke up today at 8 was fishing by 9 for 3 and half hours, was only able to fish for about an hour and half because of the wind and out going tide. My wife had one good take down, we were using the standard, circle hook with herring. The hook didn't take oh well, better luck next time, learned there are some nice kelp beds right next to shore, right after the sand beds bout 50 yards down and 100 yards out from gravel where u could anchor up with some big bait and wait for the big ones.

Gorgeous DMD! I love the look of the kayak too, and I'll keep an eye out for it on the water.  Glad to hear that you and your missus are enjoying time together outdoors. What a beautiful spring unfolding here. I hope to be on Lower Cook Inlet early next week, so appreciate the report.

Wow...

Read the reports on Alaska Outdoor Journal.  http://alaskaoutdoorjournal.com/Reports/Fishreport/anglerreport.html

Hammering kings everywhere...except on my line!  Matt did great.

Hey Michulitiq...after talking to Matt, I could have given you bad advice at least on this day.  But a lot of the weight issue is based almost 100% on the line angle you can achieve.  I'll Pm ya more about it.  I was using 16oz, but after heairng Matt was cathing them uphigh, I first add ed a bigger flasher and trolled a lot faster.  I eventually stepped down to a 10oz and was about 15 ft down.

At any rate.  It is the season!!!

Thanks for the fishing report post. Sounds like a lot of fun to be had out on the water! I need to get things pulled together here so I can join the fun!
Cut 'em straight. Fish 'em deep.

Kardinal_84...  yeah...I threw you under my fish-less bus! No, not really--had a great time just talking with those guys and getting some insight into gearing up. I had a downrigger issue and once that happened, I was not in a situation to improvise on my gear. Live and learn. Still. Great way to spend a weekend.

Got a limit on butts rowing from Deep Creek, so hoping you folks at WG are finding lots of action.

Arghhhh....ok. I'm in Kenai.  Going to hit super earlier and got to be back in anchorage by 7pm   Whiskey gulch for kings or Deep Creek for halibut. I've got a truck but it's a rental so leaning towards Whiskey Gulch. How easy was the beach run in the vehicle if you did that Pam?

The beach is TERRIBLE -- it needs a lot of extra care if you're driving it. 4WD low, very soft! Not Volvo ready.
