Worm and a bobber is probably the cheapest option.

Many seem to be trying the lowrance elite 4 hdi lately. Maybe someone may have an older model that it replaced for you? Good luck on your search hayday.

I had my mind made up to get a Humminbird.  Then I went to the store where they had a display with all of the current models running in demo mode, and decided on the Lowrance Elite-4 HDI.  I think it's the best bang for the buck.  I'd suggest going to a store with a display to get a better idea of what the different models offer.

I bought the Lowrance Elite 4 DSI with GPS/Chartplotter.  It was the best deal at Cabela's.  I found it to be easy to use and like the detail it shows as you are trolling.

I was set on the Humminbird 386ci, then saw a lot of buzz about the elite 4 hdi. Didn't take much convincing.   Definitely the best bang for your buck.

About a month ago I was in the same situation as you and I went with the Raymarine Dragonfly Gold.  Commands are simple and easy to use.
Screen is 5.75 diagonal. I am still learning it and used it both on FW and SW.  The transducer is about 8 inches long and 2 inches wide. I did a water bath in hull install on my Revo 13.  My Lowrance Elite 5 combo is now my back up unit.

If cash is an issue you can get a cheap Lowrance X4. It has almost no features like DSI or GPS, but for less than $100 it works. If you want you can always get a handheld gps or upgrade later as $ permits.

I have the Lowrance Elite 4, color sonar/chart plotter.  Compact and waterproof, great unit.  More than anything, the support at Lowrance is awesome.  I have called their techs a few times, even from the water, and they have helped me fine tune the unit from good to great.

I think Fisherman's Marine has them on sale at the moment, for much less than I purchased the unit for last summer.

Lowrance Elite 4xHDI at Fishermans for $188. They do have the Elite 4HDI which has the GPS also, but at $369 seems a lot more to pay for just having gps.
