I once read that the Native American Recipe for tasty shad involved catching them, bringing them home then burying them, and then planting vegetables where they were buried.

More seriously, I want shad for sturgeon/crab bait.  We're approaching prime crabbing season in Oregon at the end of the summer, and I'd like to do some kayak crabbing.

Mmmm crab.  Now that would get me some good WAF points.  I guess I need to go get some new traps soon as well.

=)  I would like to go crabbing this year as well.  Have you guys ever heard of the crabhawk?  basically it's a crap/lobster catcher that you cast off a tuna pole.  Supposedly they work fairly well, was thinking this might work well on my yak instead of trying to store all the pots and fussing around with them, plus it seems like you'd get more action this way instead of playing the waiting game...  Their website is lo-fi, but i've seen videos of it in action on youtube and my buddy tells me he's seen people "fishing for crabs" with it...  http://www.crabhawk.com/

What do you guys think?

I picked up these nifty "Coil Away" collapsable crab rings at Fisherman's Marine back in the spring.  In essence, they are full sized crab rings with the hoops made out of rubber-coated fiberglass instead of metal.  This allows them to be "coiled up" into a tight circle like those pop up tents that were popular a few years ago.  Have yet to try them from the kayak, but they seem ideal for addressing the issue of tight space in a small boat.
