I am hitting Cape Kiwanda tomorrow. Launching in the morning and fishing until 3ish. Feel free to join me if you'd like. I'll be on VHF 71.

Anybody know a decent spot there for greenling or are they pretty much omnipresent on the reef?

Look for greenling in the kelp just inside of the haystack rock.

Man the timing of this warm snap is KILLING ME. Tomorrow looks like a good day out there... I'd be there if I could, if just to participate in the Big Year. :)

If it's a good day out there you should be able to hit 4-5 species (at least 1 greenling species, cabezon, lingcod, black rockfish, blue rockfish, and lottery rockfish).

Good luck, hope it's as nice as the forecast. Looking forward to the video already!

I'll probably be out there tomorrow.  I'll be in a sand colored T15.  Should be fun!

Stay away from the rocks, take your seasickness pills, bring water, and have fun! Follow the more experienced guys if you can. There are very good places to fish just north of the rock, 50 to 200 yards north. If it's windy you can also seek some cover behind it. If you can't find fish you can also head for the yellow can. There is good fishing between the rock and the can. If you draw a straight line between those two spots you're in the right area. Also make yourself aware of how fast and what direction the current is moving. It can be a log way home if you misjudge the speed and travel with it. It can also change during the course of the day. Watch for schools of blacks on your ff. They may be a little deeper than normal this time of year. Good luck!

You fishing PC tomorrow? Feel free to join up with me if you want.

If its your first surf launch & salt fishing.
1.) Take your time. Study the waves and carefully pick your timing.
2.) Wear a helmet if you have one (I just wear an old bike helmet)
3.) Have your mirage drive locked in and your rudder locked and ready and try launching in knee high water.
4.) Other than that just bang jigs and plastics away on the reef with some shrimp flies above.
5.) HAVE FUN and BE SAFE!!!
6.) Plenty of workable reefs around the rock, especially west and north of it

Pretty good. I caught 8 blacks and 4 lings but couldn't scrounge up any greenlings or cabs. I bailed around noon as it was too hot and the flies were incredible out there. Had a less than perfect surf landing. I had stuffed a bunch of stuff into my center hatch and a small bead chain I use to tie a small float to my waterproof camera had wrapped around the lines that allow me to pull up my rudder and also my rudder controls. You are pretty much screwed surf landing if you can't pull up or control your rudder. I lost an ugly stick/jigmaster, few jigs, and bruised my ego a little. Sucked but lesson learned.

I also stopped for a swim in the Nestucca on the way home and cast a few Roostertails. I caught a nice little resident cuttie on my ultra-light gear.

A fun day despite the licking I took. I also added 3 species to my big fishing year and am now at 26. I am now over half way to my 50 species goal!

Way to go Tyler. Losing gear on a surf landing always bruises the ego. Not quite as bad as losing it attached to a fat Chinook, DAMHIK.

What I learned from my first time.
I need to slowdown myself and do the check list. So I won't forget thing again.
first start I thiink I did okey with the surf launching. But still need to take more time and get used to with it.
I was out there for just 1 hour and had to get back. I forgot a fish whack and a fish stringer, had the fishs jumping around ..... hahahhaaa. finally I found where to kept all the fish inside the hatch. Caught 4 Black Rockfishs for first time Kayak fishing.

I'm  glad that Jeff mention on the Seasick pill it help a lot. Also need to learn to get a better landing...

The bite at PC was pretty awesome on Thursday.  Lings everywhere.  Released a really nice cabby as well.  It pays to find the commercial dory boats that troll for lings and drift right in the area they fish.
Swell was doable and wind was calm, but some set waves were sizeable as Uplandsandpiper found out the hard way.  After my early fishing run I was out for a surf and looked over to see him get cleaned up by a good size wave.  He did well to get back in his overturned kayak and despite rudder issues get back to shore unharmed.  Gathered some of his gear for him including the Elite-4 that was rolling in the surf about 100 yrds from where he came in.

Cant wait to get back out there though.  It had been 4 months since I had been fishing at PC.
