New to the kayak fishing and wanting to try crabbing, live in garibaldi . Anyone interested in taking a newbie out in the bay, open schedule. What immersion gear will I need ? I have neoprene chest waders and a good rain coat , light weight. And any other advise would be appreciated .

not sure if mentioning hip waders was a joke or not...but the first thing I would suggest...NEVER wear hip waders on a kayak unless your fishing shallow water.

I didn't see anything in the original post about hip waders.

Neoprene chest waders are a fantastic choice for kayak fishing in my opinion.  I still have a pair of them and for cold water conditions I still dust them off and put them to use.  Living in a Garibaldi with an open schedule sounds like a pretty sweet situation to be in.   ;)

They are not hip waders or rubber , they are neoprene chest high warders that I used a lot in a float tube. Same material as a wet suit and I purchased  a new pfd the same day as the yak as it is tandem and I only had the one for the float tube. My neighbor works for the port in the summer and said he would try crabbing with me tomorow if the tide and time is right.  ;D

I wasn't in my kayak yesterday, but I was out in T- Bay and the crabbing wasn't very inspiring, but fishing for rockfish along the south jetty was smoking hot. Hope you have lots of fun.
People are beginning to catch some salmon there, so it might be worthwhile to think about that.

Jojo,

I'm looking at going down to Tillamook on Wednesday for some crabbing and rock fish.  I will be heading out just before the tide turns, and then coming back with the incoming tide.  Haven't decided on exact times, but will be launching out of the RV Park near the Coast Guard station.

Big tide exchanges all week, with several minus low tides, so not sure if I want to fish the south jetty, unless it's at slack or incoming tide.

High tide looks to be around 2 what time were you thinking , I'm in a Jackson Big Tuna with cheap paddles so I won't be setting any bay speed records . I was thinking 11-12 drop in?

I'm going to drop a pot off my yak in the am tomorow in tilly bay , first time pulling one from the yak . Any tips or advise would be appreciated , going to drop it close to the docks by the old coast guard house that way if I can't get it back in the boat my neighbor or my wife can drop a line off the dock to me and recover the pot. Going to do some rock fishing on the south side jetty while it soaks. No camera for the newbie follies but I will post the results tomorrow afternoon.

With high tide at ~2PM, a morning run from the Coast Guard pier to the south jetty is gonna be a bit taxing for a newbie. There's going to be a lot of water coming into the bay; that's going to severely limit the speed at which you travel toward the jetty. Not trying to discourage you...just don't want to see you get frustrated by unrealistic expectations.  You will likely come across a treadmill of sorts.

I'm not sure what the minus tide will look like by the pier; maybe you can get a really early start, drop your pot, and catch a ride to the jetty.

If you have the typical Daneilson folding trap, you'll have no problem pulling it.

Anyway...have fun!

This product is totally the bomb for jetty rockfish:
http://www.amazon.com/Berkley-GMI4-BS-Minnow-Black-4-Inch/dp/B000GB0526/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1400029594&sr=8-1&keywords=gulp+4%22+black+shad+minnow
it is a little expensive, but worth it. If you stretchy thread it on to the jig-head, you will get 10 or so fish per bait. I use 1/4 to 1/2 oz jig-heads in Tillamook Bay.
They sell it at Tillamook Sporting Goods and the store at Barview Jetty.
Hope this helps somebody.

Add 5 lbs to your trap if it's the cheap Danielson. Did you have a dry top you plan on using?

You'll probably have a bit of a slog through the mud once you launch given what the tidal cycle is for tomorrow.  This will likely make your launch take a bit longer.  Low slack will happen sometime around 8 or 9 so if you'll need to be heading out to the jetties by then.
