I removed the tiny wrist bungee from my plastic lip grippers and replaced it with about 20" of 3/16" bungee and a brass clip.  I've had the Lings do a gator roll on me several times.  I just set the fish back into the water to calm down a while.  It can twist and shake all it likes, and the bungee just absorbs the shock and spins without a problem.
