I still have in mind some trips to American for Kokes but starting to lift my eyes toward the sound.  Anyone chasing them yet?

I went out in the evening on Sunday because it was so nice out...Tide was not in my favor at all so I ended up paddling more than fishing. But I did manage to mooch some herring and I fished some Darts for about 2 hours off the slag pile and new construction area on the waterfront. Did not get any hits except for a couple of flounder so it was pretty much a bust. Weather was great though. I am going to hit it hard this weekend with my buddy though. We were thinking of putting in at Gig Harbor and then working the west side of the Narrows along Dalco down to Narrows Park to take out...Depending on tide conditions. Either that or going to try and get over to the Girl Scout Camp on Vashon and try our luck out there. There wasn't a ton of pressure out there that I saw.

launched w/ a buddy in his PB this morning around 6am. Fished through 10am right at point defiance, just south of the ferry. Lots of hookups (one within 30 seconds of dropping the first line), but it was one of those days - one lost downrigger ball, two lost flashers, three lost spoons (bottom, seals, user-error, etc...). There are fish there. All hugging the bottom. The few other boats out almost all got limits. We would've had ours in less than 30 minutes if....

I'm now itching to try it on the yak, but those currents are serious business.

the golden ticket - 11" green or chart prochip mylar flasher, 3.5" irish cream double-glow kingfisher spoon.

maybe other stuff would've worked, but that's what we used, and couldn't keep em off the line (and then couldn't keep them ON the line, but that's a different story).

When I have been out the Darts (candlefish and herring) have worked pretty well for me...I just got gear together to start trolling next time...8 oz. ball weight, Kone Zone flasher, herring helmet...But I do have Cop Cars, Irish Cream, you name the colors. Mooching with herring has always worked the best for me in the end...I have no Mirage Drive and no downrigger so getting to the right depth and staying there is tough...Any ideas?

Good to hear some reports.

I am going to be running a downrigger and all the usual stuff.  I have never trolled an 11" flasher so I am wondering if I am going to be able to maintain the speed on that. So I am looking at some different kind of flashers. (konezone etc).

I also want to try one of these: http://www.sheltonproducts.com/FBR.html

whoops. meant to post this, accidentally pm'd it to kaptain king:

I have neither a downrigger or a pedal-kayak.

The only thing i've been able to use that's been pretty good at deep-water trolling (sans DR) is this - http://www.torpedodivers.com/torpedo.asp. I've got the cuda version. If it's shallower than 50 feet, I'll use a planer, but pull out the torpedo for anything deeper.

It does create a lot of drag on one side of the yak, though. I always overcame that on Lake Michigan by trolling two rods, evening the drag out on both sides, but I obv'y can't do that here. I imagine a rudder would do much to take care of that issue, though, which I sorely need to buy and install. Rotating the angle of the rod towards the front or rear of the yak would help, too, but then you've got issues come hook-set time.

If you do get a torpedo, a few simple modifications will make it perform much better. Drop me a line if you'd like my suggestions on how to do so. Too lazy to type out right now.

*two other big plusses for the cuda - (1) some degree of certainty on what depth you're running, and (2) you don't have to let out much more line than you would on a regular downrigger.

yeah I did the g-flex repair. I have had it out a few times including a hobuck trip and haven't had any issues.

Nice. I look forward to hearing how you do. i've been out there lately on a buddy's PB a few times with some success, and have been itching to try clay banks from the yak, but the currents out there are vicious and turn on a dime. Best of luck.
