I have a friend installing a Garmin 140 fishfinder into his P15. It isn't reading depths very often, and when it does, it picks a number and stays with it, instead of varying with the bottom. Any ideas on what might be going wrong? I haven't seen the installation yet, but from what I understand, he's done the typical goop to the inside of the hull.

thanks,
Brian

If you get air bubbles in the goop as it is applied, it will cause problems like that.  Solution is to peel old goop off and try again.

What 3w said. If it's tough to peel the Goop off put a hairdryer to it and warm it up. That should help it release. Try the foam puck method to never have to deal with goopy bubbles again.

That doesn't sound like a goop bubbles issue to me ... unless it was done really bad.  Most of the time bubbles result in random looking "noise" in the upper water column.  At least that's my experience.

I re-goop my 'ducer just about every year because I'm convinced it naturally degrades and starts to distort the signal.  Take a large screwdriver and get it just a bit under there.  Often times you can pop it off like a abalone.  It just takes a little air gap to get going.

thanks for the tips, I'll pass them along. I like the foam installation. if i ever step up to electronics, I'll have to check that out.

With all the good reviews I'm hearing of the puck method, I'm planning on doing that as well, the next time I have to pull a 'ducer or install a new one.   ;)
