I got registered for the tourney, so now I have some packing and logistics to figure out.

Advice on the following would be appreciated:
-rods to bring
-how deep is the water you normally fish at DB?
-tackle
-should I rent an RV or bring a tent?
-do I really need a net?
-other random tips

I look forward to meeting up with the folks from here.  And yes, I'll talk to Rudy to see if he'll come too
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

-rods to bring
Anything you'd use for targeting lings in AK will be good
-how deep is the water you normally fish at DB?
less than 100'
-tackle
Lancer jigs (contact revjcp), lead head jigs with grubs, whatever you're used to using for rockfish/lings will work
-should I rent an RV or bring a tent?
Most of us will be tent camping, some bringing RV's.  Depends on your required level of creature comforts.
-do I really need a net?
No.

-rods to bring
Whatever you are comfortable with for fishing for rockfish, but remember the competition is for the single most heaviest fish. Also don't forget there is the side competition with the Barbie pole for charity.
-how deep is the water you normally fish at DB?
Most all of the area marked out on the map is within about 60 ft deep max if I recall correctly. The best opportunity is within the rocky structure found closer to shore in these depths.
-tackle
2-4oz weights on a drop shot or jigs, and swim baits. bait such as herring work as do sand shrimp, clam necks. The big one will bite on shrimp flies also.
-should I rent an RV or bring a tent?
Personal preference here. There are RV spots available. Our group will have a tenting area, but check out Chinook Bends website to get a feel.
-do I really need a net?
No. It could come in handy, but a pair of lip grippers is what most people use.
-other random tips
Read the rules carefully about what minimum gear is required. Flag, light signal horn etc. Highly recommend a VHF radio, and preferably GPS. Buddy system. It can get foggy. This was the case last year and there was an incident requiring Coast Guard intervention.
There is always the possibility for the surf/swell conditions to not be conducive and the competition may revert to the "alternate" venue. You will want to bring gear in case that happens.
Check out the protocol for entering and exiting through the "hole" at Depot Bay harbor.
The launch area is small. Try to put a plan together ahead of time to minimize congestion at the ramp. Prepare to have a good time, good food, and meet some great people! There is a great showing and donations by vendors. There's a ton of schwag to go home with. Its real neat to put faces with names!
Better to keep ones mouth shut and presumed a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.

Fog was 2012.  Last year weather was decent.  Wind kicked up around 10-10:30AM though as I recall.

IIRC last year the decision was not to have an alternate location due to permitting issues and the large number of participants.  I haven't heard or seen anything about an alternate for this year, so if the bar is closed expect no tournament.  Unless the organizers post up something to the contrary.

Not really any hot spots, just get your jigs down in the rocks.  If you aren't sticking lures, you aren't fishing.

Pretty much.  Most of the area inside the official boundaries are going to hold fish.  If you feel like it's more sandy than rocky the paddle a little ways and try again.

I'm starting to pack up for my departure on Wednesday night.  Should arrive in PDX Thursday morning.

I've got a ride lined up for Saturday (Thanks Jammer), but nothing yet for Friday.  It would be nice to get out and familiarize myself with the area and potentially catch a fish or 2.  Anyone have a ride I can bum on Friday?  What kind of beer do you like?

As far as my goodies...

I've got some jigs, hooks, reels, rods, pfd, radio, gps, camera, and clothes.  I'm still working on tent vs other options, but should have that figured out soon.

What am I missing?  any words of wisdom?

Looking forward to meeting everyone.  I'll be the one wandering around looking like he's lost.

Could someone enlighten me on what "big" is for Oregon.  Not poking fun, I just know some of us can get spoiled in AK.  Just spent 3 days fishing on a big boat for lings and rockfish......I threw back several lings that guys from WA on the boat were crying about (they weren't AK legal though).  The rockfish we caught we pretty big too.

Just looking for an idea of what I might expect to catch, and what might be a winner.

 Hey Andy,

The minimum size for ling cod in Oregon is 24'" compared to Alaska's 35" minimum. The black rock fish may / probably won't be as big as you may be used to in Alaska either. One that is 5 lbs. is pretty respectable down here. That will be your major catch more than likely. Not quite as much variety as Alaska... or at least not in the same numbers or size. Others might disagree with my assessment ... but that has been my experience.
Have you got a ride from PDX down to Depoe Bay yet ? I'm not in Portland , but we have a lot that are. If you need help --- speak up.
Sounds like you'll be at Chinook Bend by Thursday. Shouldn't be a problem getting you out on Friday.
Any other concerns -- sound off.

It's actually 22" minimum for Lings in Oregon, but anything below 25" really isn't worth keeping it unless it's the only Ling you find all day.   :-\
