So I'm trying to get geared up for the salmon season, but don't have a lot of $$ to spend on tackle.  Any suggestions for lures/jigs/terminal tackle I should buy?

Thanks!

  • 1) Old school mooching tackle: some banana weights (2-6oz), swivels and hooks (circle or octopus). Some herring for plugs, and you're in business.
  • 2) Jigs: Pt Wilson darts or Buzzbombs/Zzingers. Stick with the smaller sizes, up to 2 1/2oz.
  • 3) Add dodgers or flashers and you can use them with the herring, or with spoons and streamers and hootchies.

Got any fly gear? The silvers are a favorite wityh flyrodders. There are some places where you even have a legitimate chance off the beach.

Oh I've got plenty of fly gear.  ;D I actually teach fly tying/fishing classes for a local shop.  The king in my avatar pic was caught last week on the Kalama on my 6 wt. fly rod while fishing for steelhead. It was a pretty incredible fight, I really put the wood to the fish and pretty much brought the Sage XP to the breaking point to land the fish quickly.

Thanks for the info!

Ditto what Pisco said.

As it is coho season, I'd reach for a 4-6 ounce banana sinker and a cutplug herring and troll, troll, troll at 2-3 mph.   I'd work this for a good amount of time before even beginning to think about changing up.

But I'll also break out the spoons.  My current favorite is this 3 inch coyote spoon.  It worked pretty well for the guy I loaned it too up in Ketchikan.  He was happy, but I stuck with herring and had equal success.

Coho killer spoons work well too.  Spoons can be trolled behind banana weights or even plain on the surface if the fish are active on the surface.  I like green tones to my spoons.

If it's slow, I might put a size 0 dodger or an 8 inch glow green hot spot ahead of the herring or spoon.   Longer leaders (40" plus) in this case as the cutplug or spoons already have their own action and the dodger/flasher adds attraction and a little bit extra action.  When kayak fishing, I like to avoid the extra bling unless I'm desperate.    :)

Flys, hunh? Talk to Leland (if I remember his name correctly) at Patrick's Fly Shop, on Eastlake (Seattle). Clousers, in chart. green and pink; Leland's foamheads; and various streamers. They can actually be pretty dull looking; the flashy stuff catches fisherman. The retrieve seems to be the key; two-handed stripping is the norm.

Ahhh yesss, the $7.00 Leland popper! ::)  Leleand and Les Johnson both work for Orvis in Bellevue now. I definitely have the fly fishing aspect down, but I'm still learning the ropes on fishing conventional tackle.
I actually made it out SRC fishing twice this past week with a grea amount of success. In about 7 hours I'll be on the 5:20 AM ferry to chase them around again. We should meet up sometime to fish for SRC's.

Thanks for the info Allen,  I've got all my gear ready to roll now I just need to go get some tackle.
