I'm always telling people that whales are very curious but go out of their way to avoid hurting the puny humans.  Well, here's proof.  I have to admit though, when I saw that beast coming at me at full speed, I wasn't sure he'd be able to avoid a collision.  Notice me scooting forward a little to bail should we make contact.

Fun times!  ;D  And just another reason I love kayak fishing!

Epic!

I think I would have pooped myself with that close of a dive by.

The little twins that were playing around the south side to the buoy bell surfaced about 20 feet north of me and then circled back and surfaced again behind me about 100 feet back.  They were giving the whale watchers quite the show.  They appeared again when Justin, Andy, John and I were coming in through the channel.  They were between us and the sea wall.

Nice shooting Mark the look on your face was priceless. I can't remember the name of who I was talkin to close to the bell buoy in the red yak but he had one break and blow 5 feet behind him and I thought he too was going to leap out of the boat.

That may have been me Mojo.  I think Neal and a few others saw it as well. Same kind of breach, but missed me by about a few feet.  Plus a good tail slap.  Fun stuff!

Bet there was a Spot in your shorts! Was that Saturday or Sunday? We saw a pod of four or five very large whales about an hour south this afternoon. But we were up safely 200' above.

It's really too bad neither Allen nor I had a GoPro running on the paddle back in.  We were just cruising along chatting about kids and whatnot when a Stellar Sea Lion jumped up and splashed back into the water maybe 10' in front Allen.  Scared the shit out of him.

  Hey Mark,

I think that video is one of the best "catches" I have seen so far at ORC. Nice job and thanks for sharing.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

At one point a whale watching boat quietly rolled up into big group of us (10 or 12) and I thought: "I guess they must be bored and decided to look at those crazy people on pool toys floating around in circles in the fog. There aren't any whales around here."

Then a big crusty head and back rolled about 30 yards away from me, then another at about 10. :o

I guessed wrong.

Your encounter was waaaay better!  Awesome video of a sphincter tightening moment!
