How Y'all Are!?
I hope all are recovering well from the ORC this weekend.
I have a question from one of our Port commissioners,....
what would make for a kayak friendly Port?
My first thought was a launch ramp (slide) for the Yaks. And now designs are floating in my head.
The Port of Brookings-Harbor is talking about additions that would attract kayak anglers and pleasure seekers.
What would Y'all as yakers like to see?
   user friendly ramp....
   a separate parking area.....
   kayak only events....
   hosting HOW events....
Please feel free to list any ideas you may have, and some simple plan designs for your idea if applicable.
Thanks so much for any input.

BTW... the fishing has been stellar this year, so many Salmon in the Bay you nearly have to dodge them! Rockfish is very strong and the Lings won't quit biting, Halibut are being taken as well. I hope to see more fishing yaks here soon!

Very cool they want to do something for kayakers. A separate lane you could either cart down or back a trailer down would be awesome. Something removed from the normal boat ramp madness.

I really want to get down there and do some fishing. When is usually the best month condition wise for the ocean? Seems like the wind is almost always blowing something nasty.

If it can be done widen the road and designate a lane specific for trailers that have to back into the ramp so car toppers can drive in and drop out of the way of the PB's. I had one yell at me as I drove past so I stopped and explained to him that I was going to the playground area to get set up and in no way would be delaying him from his turn in line and infact he was out long before I was even in the water.

Another idea the Port might consider is adding a small, low dock for kayakers to tie up to when loading and unloading. The other ideas mentioned already certainly have merit too.
It's great to see a port authority taking an active interest in kayak anglers' needs and asking for comments from the  community. Wish that more ports would do this.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

One of the best kayak launches I like to use, is just a floating dock from the regular moorings.  Down a ramp which was widened to allow easier access for kayaks and especially small sailboats onto the dock.  The best part, there is a freshwater wash down at the floating dock.  Now, if they only had a cleaning station there ...

Good points,
I am thinking of trying to get them to designate a small parking lot that is already in existence, it sits next to the fuel tanks, has a set of steps to a ramp, a wheelchair ramp as well.
It is the access used for transient boats to dock and much space is left unused. It has several fresh water hose bibs, power boxes (N/A), and a low floating dock.
I have used the place for years for free, but would not mind paying a launch fee if they were to set this area aside for the Yakker's.
A cleaning station would be great, that will go on my list as well.
When we get enough ideas together, I will write them up and talk with the Port Director ( old friend) and the commissioners (more friends).
I was thinking about a kayak launch as something with a few boards/pipes/? to make a slide one would lower the Yak down and crank it back up with a hand winch.
Please, any more input is much needed!

This is relevant to my interests.

You guys have year round rockfish. We have a big group two hours south that fishes pretty hard on the regular and we have been talking about brookings for rockfish and lings in late fall and winter.

As for what would be nice to see-

Heated Bathrooms with showers
Lighted parking
A cleaning station, for gear as well as fish. Protected from prevailing winds
Floating dock low to the water next to the ramp with cleats to tie off on
Separate launch lanes and docks from the powerboaters
Dry camping for ease of multi day trips

  Hmmmm,
I know the Port has showers and bathrooms...not sure if they are heated though.
Parking is already there, not sure of lighting.
the cleaning station is a few hundred yards from the launch. A small dockside cleaning station is needed.
low dock with cleats are in place.
No PB access at this location ( it is near the cleaning station afore mentioned) no "drive ramp", thus the need for a "slide" to be installed.
As for camping, the Port maintains a campground right there, too easy, they may even give a discount to participants for camping during events. Also several restaurants and motels are within a few hundred yards of the launch as well. A friend of my wifes owns a condo complex sitting over the river, she rents them out long or short term for those needing a "home".
would love to see Y'all up this way.
 Thanks for the reply!
And yes, we have rockfishing year round.

All the ideas mentioned so far seem great along with some information about these accommodations for people that aren't too familiar with the area; like a map that shows the locations of the said yak slide, dock, cleaning station, showers, campground, etcetera...
