I'm a little behind on getting this post out, but that's kind of how the work week went.  Wife and I headed for a weekend at Cape Kiwanda.  We stayed in a cabin in the RV park across the street from the Pelican Brew Pub.  Pretty nice setup and made for a nice weekend.

I got up on Friday morning (6-27) at 0430 (I'm working day shift so this my bodies normal wake up time now).  Rolled out of bed jump in the car and made the long 1 minute drive across the road and down to the beach.  I beat all the dorry boats to the water.  The beach was empty and the water was flat.  It was awesome!  Paddled out to the haystack rock and tried to position based on other folks posts.  Starting jiggin a motor oil curly tail with a black football lead head.  Not to much action for the first 30 minutes.  The dorry boats started coming and I moved position.  I tried to respect their space (I know guide boats can get their panties in a bunch if you follow them around).  Got within about 50 yards of the haystack and noticed a bunch a surface action (small fish come to the surface).  As I'm looking to see what type of fish the rod goes bendo!  Yeah my first ever saltwater fish!

I ended up catching four quillback rockfish in the next ten minutes.  Three were 12-14 inch ranch and one was 22".  The 22 was kept for dinner.  I found it most entertaining that when I started catching I had two dorry boats at my door step.  I think I did that to them I have shots fired across the bow.  After the ten minutes it pretty much died off.  I stayed out for another 45 minutes with no action.  I headed back in to take the morning walk on the beach with the wife.

Luckily the wife was at the beach already for some pics.  I was too scared to take out the camera on my first voyage.

I attempted to go out on Saturday as well.  The launch went OK but when I when I got out there I was bobbing up and down in what I believe were 5-6 swells.  I just didn't like the feeling and didn't like watching the dorry boats go in and out of sight as I road the wave.  It turned into a paddle and paddle right back in deal.

Nice work/play bluknight!
never eaten quillback, how was it?
I think the first shot of you and the best friend on the beach should be framed.
Those friends don't last forever :(

I filleted him out and it was awesome.  Very firm white meat.  Just sauteed in butter with a little / salt / pepper.  Couldn't ask for a better dinner.  Unfortunately you are right about my best friend - I grew with several goldens as pets but he is my first outside the parents house.  They are great pups!
