Who else is planning to carpool to Moutcha Bay on Labor Day weekend from any starting point at all?  Thought it might be good to open a thread where people can look to find a ride or rider.

If at first you don't succeed....  maybe skydiving is just not for you.

Okay, having opened the thread.... I'll be traveling to Moutcha for the big derby weekend from the Seattle area and so far I still need to find someone to share that drive.  I'm willing to ride with someone else or we can take my fishing rig, which is my 2001 Isuzu Trooper.  It's always been totally reliable for me and easily has the room for two people and a LOT of their gear including big ice chests.  I can almost for sure accommodate a third person, but I can't imagine getting a 3rd kayak on top.  I went with two other contestants last year (in Pisco Sicko's rig) and I don't have any problem with something like that again.

I'd like to go up on Thursday night, leaving Seattle in time to at least camp on the island somewhere that night.  I'd also like to start the drive back maybe late on Monday after one more day fishing and helping to clean up camp, but I'm flexible on the schedule on both ends.  Post me back here to reply, or PM me if you think that's neccessary.  Let's get this thing going!

Why not see if anyone has a utility trailer in good shape that could be use to cheaply transport multiple kayaks and/or gear?  Some 2x4's, 90 degree angle metal braces, metal corner eye bolts, and some foam padding and you have a decent kayak trailer.  Just be sure and grease the bearings before heading off.

I'd love to go, but my wife graduates from grad school later in Sept, and that will be our big travel time.

right now i intend to go up one day early and back one day late also. i have a 2wd p/u with a dry shell, and am thinking i will be loading my boat on the top of it. am currently working on a rack to hover over the shell so i quit denting it when i strap down. the one i want will allow me to carry at least 2 boats, possibly 3.

as i've stated in other threads mentioning this trip, i can, and would be happy to, take one other with me, all they have to is contact me to arrange pick up. since i'm down in the lower end of the sound area, i'll be swinging west over thru the tacoma oly area and then up the 101 to the ferry crossing.

still a month out, but T is right, we should start planning our rides and such now.

W.R.,

If you're looking for input on what to take, could I get you to open a new thread?  I'm hoping to keep this one down to just the logistics of getting to the event and back again.

I'm planning on heading up Thursday morning and back on Tuesday morning.  But that may stretch out if I feel like a few more days off.

I'm working on getting a trailer set to head up and will gladly be the "mule" for you all.  Actually I haven't started work on the trailer yet ... but I'm thinking about about it really hard.   ;)

Hey

I will be heading up to Moutcha again this year but my dedicated fishing buddy is not able to go!  She will be driving her Mini back to Massachusetts where we will be moving just as soon as this house sells.  That is a whole new topic...

But, that is good news for the rest of you as y'all might stand a chance to win this year!   ;D

My friend Brian might be coming up with me and he is going to be using Carolyn's boat.  What that means is that I have a 4 door GMC pickup with room for gear and 2 other bodies.  If there are boats to haul, that would entail a trailer or folding kayaks.  I can tow if we have a trailer available.

We will be going up to PA and taking the Blackball to Victoria.  Probably leaving a few days early for some Tyee pool action or some paddling around Nootka prior to the derby dates.

Does that jive with anybody's plans or needs?

Let me know.  Also, if we have excess basecamp stuff to haul up there, I can take some.

The weather is perfect.
The water is perfect.
The current is perfect.
The tide is perfect.
Now all we need is the secret ingredient!

Sweet Zed, I'm sure there'll be a few people who will take you up on that. And glad to hear your fishing buddy won't be there for a repeat... just kidding! ;) Too bad she can't make it.
