We float smaller rivers and that takes two vehicles and we have a problem.  The new vehicle - the downstream recovery vehicle - cannot hold both kayaks and since it's her car, The Boss has nixed adding roof racks or a trailer hitch.

Does anyone know of a product, or DIY'd a way to lock the kayaks to a stationary object - a tree or whatever - that would discourage someone from running off with them while we go back after my truck?

GOT THIS ANSWERED: Use the scupper holes!  I'm smarter on days other than Tuesdays.

I could not delete this post, so, until someone can, Asked and Answered.

I know you got your answer on locking, but consider this as an option for your original problem...   http://www.maloneautoracks.com/handirack.php  they're inflatable, removable roof racks.  I have been using them for a couple of years to haul my Elie 12-footer around on my Honda Civic.  Just a thought   8)

Thank you.  It won't work with a Ford Transit (no rear window to use to secure the second pad), but I'm sure someone can make use of the information.

Have they marred your paint in any way?

I can understand not wanting to add a roof rack as they can be unsightly and they add drag.  But why not a trailer hitch?  They're mostly hidden from view, usually don't require cutting/drilling to install (most cars have weld nuts installed for hitches even if you don't ever use them), and are all but unnoticable during normal use.  If she's off-roading a lot with the car (doesn't sound like it) the reduction in clearance at the back might be an issue but that's about it.

Had to look up a Ford Transit...  No, I guess they wouldn't work.  Trailer hitch would be the way to go, you can always pull out the hitch from the receiver portion and hide it with one of those decorative plate gizmos...

The inflato-racks have not marred the paint, but I have done that myself in the process of hoisting the boat up...  I don't really count that, since I'd have done the same thing with regular racks most likely.   :-\  I'm kinda in the market for a new truck* so these will be my solution till then.

* - waiting for the new GM p/u (Canyon/Colorado model) that is finally going to be made in the right size again...  I don't want a full-size dammit, just my little one like they used to make (S-10 series)!
