The Columbia river should be heating up in a few weeks at the Buoy 10 fishery. This is big water and needs some careful planning and execution to do it safely.   I have heard about several launch points including the Skipanon R, Deep R, etc.

Does anyone have some good tips on fishing here? I figure a day with a mild tide shift and a morning incoming tide would be best. Any inputs would be great. Thanks.

Check out the August issue of NWS for a narrative overview of B10 strategy.  It can be implemented in whole or in part.

As for launch points, anywhere there's publicly accessible beach can be your launch point.  There are dozens on both the Oregon and Washington sides and don't forget about the Tongue Point area as well.

I'll be fishing out of Knappton Friday. That is the rough launch off Hwy 401 . High tide is at 6:53 am with a low tide around 12:30 pm. Would rather fish the incoming tide so might not launch til 10:30 or so. The I can fish the east side of the "Ship wreck Troll", turn around and fish with the incoming back to my put in place. I picked up some Bob Toman's Thumper Flex Squid Spinners I want to try. Like the idea of a chain shaft rather than a solid shaft to keep 'em on.

         Report will follow........

Thx Mark. A buddy and I are going to drive the Washington side of the Columbia from PDX to the bridge to Astoria today. We are looking for good potential launch points for our kayaks to allow us to participate in the Buoy 10 fishery. I will have to watch for the Knappton location you referenced.

Yeah, I have been studying the shoreline very carefully with Google Earth but want to also check it out personally if I need to park and launch at an unimproved site. I suspect there will be many options but am hoping to find a couple of good ones.

I have driven that stretch of highway and I know there are a few free unimproved spots near where boat anglers do pretty well. If there is a seminar, count me in!

Never fished it but from what I have heard you should be able to walk from one side of the river bank to the other. Unless it's calmed down in the last 5 or so years. Seriously though  are there really that many boats out there during the salmon run?

It really is the most power boats I have ever seen fishing a given area. Thousands, literally.

The good news is the actual fishing area is huge. On small rivers, you can have a dozen boats and feel crowded. The bigger challenge for us kayak guys is to work the edges with less boats around but still find fish in the area. Very big water but with some pre-planning caution & common sense, the location can be epic.
