I'm getting tired of loading my Outback on top of my Ford Expedition, and looking to purchase a used kayak/utility trailer.  I'm also looking at buying a second Outback for my son, and two outbacks will be too heavy to put on top of my rig.

I'm thinking about building one from a Harbor Freight Tools kit, but wanted to reach out to see if anyone from our group may be tired of their trailer, wanting to clear out the garage, and part with it for a reasonable price.

Any thoughts?

Watch Craig's List for a Snowbear. You can throw your Outback on there without modification, and with a little engineering you could load 12 more! Islandson piles 13 on his. I comfortably do 5 on mine.

Awesome trailer.  I'll take it!!!!

That's pretty close to what I'm looking for.  I've been looking on Craigslist, but it's difficult to find something that isn't from the stone ages.

did you have to lengthen the tongue on your trailer?

I'm also looking to put in a break away tongue so I can store it in a smaller space.

I will keep my eye out.  Thanks for the advice.

Cosmo did you forget I have a welder? Find the trailer ya want as a flat bed or utility, buy the steel and bring it over. Next time were fishing we can talk about it more and put some ideas on paper.

Been looking for a trailer too.  Hopefully the easier loading will help get me out more often.  Atleast that's the plan.  Good luck in your search -

Alan

I did not forget about your professional welder.  Can she cook too?   ;)

When I find a trailer, I will be calling for your help.

The snow bear trailers usually come with an extendable tongue

I recently built a kayak trailer based on a HF kit by extending the tongue and welding on some racks. With the exception of a recent embarrassing weld failure (hey it's not my calling, OK?) it's performed really well. THAT SAID, it has been much more of a project than I imagined, so be prepared for some hours to get it like you want it. For me it's worth it because I had some pretty specific design considerations, but it could be a bummer if you just want something that works NOW.

Good luck! Once you go trailer you never go back. I can't imagine putting my tandem on top of the Xterra again now... what was I thinking?

All the Snow Bear I've seen are dump trailers, so the tongue is attached by the same pins as the ball in your tow hitch. That said you can extend them, and remove them for storage space as long as you put some quick disconnects in the wiring. You might PM wobler for pics of SB trailer builds too. He's done a few

Consider buying a used PWC/Jet ski trailer......side by sides are usually around $600 and some are galvanized too.

A fellow is selling a top of the line Malone 2012 MicroSport kayak trailer that is ready to go with a collapsible tongue, spare tire, 12" wheels, cross bars and saddles for two boats, and a storage bin. These sell new for $1800 and he is asking for $1050. He is in Vacaville.

It seems that our Snowbear secret is out. They are a great platform to modify info what you want. They have a lot of good things going for them.
1) removable and adjustable tongue.
2) An 8 ft bed that folds downtown a 12 ft flat bed
3) adjustable axel
4) light weight. My wife's little car can tow it.

A word of caution. The Snowbear trailer came in a myriad of forms but had 3 side panel grades. The light weight panels are basically a sheet of metal with three metal bars that act as stakes. The medium duty sides are more of a panel with box edges and bolt to the bed using the stakes and extra reinforcements. These usually have a straight tube on top. The heavy duty sides have strength folds running the length of the panels. In my experience either the medium or heavy duty sides work. The heavy duty configuration works the best though.

I too have been keeping an eye out for them. If I find one I usually buy it and bring it back to this group.

Please excuse any errors in this post. My internet system is down. I am typing this on my iPhone. These buttons are very small

what is your price range?  Bi-Mart has started carrying a trailer that looks just like the Bear for about $700.  It might even be the same trailer, just rebranded.
