Guys,

The largest trolling motor I can fit through the mirage drive hole is a 30 lb thrust watersnake motor.  I'm a little like Tim the tool man.  I don't need to go any faster, but it would be nice at times.  I understand the basics of DC motors and understand that doubling the voltage may increase the motor speed and torque, but has the potential to shorten the life of the motor.  I know there are a lot of videos of people modifying 12 volt power wheel kid cars to operate on 24 volt instead of 12 volt.  I'm not looking for someone to tell me how wrong I am to try it.  I'm looking to hear if anyone has actually tried operating their 12 volt motor on 24 volts??  If so, how long did the motor last?   I have two 20 ah batteries I can wire in series to get the 24 volts.

Thanks....

Del

What type of DC motor and what are you using for the speed controller?
If you just plug in a higher voltage power source, it may run faster, or end quickly with a disappointing puff of smoke. If the latter, you can always rebuild the motor to your own specs and/ or buy a more suitable motor and higher amped esc. It just depends on how involved you want to get.

....but if you keep it 12 volt and run your 2 12v batteries in parallel, you will increase the Amps/Hours which is a better proposition in my opinion. I run an Endura 30 on my Commander and it doesn't need any more torque or speed. There is always the option of changing the prop pitch though too.

I don't need to go faster....I just want to.  I like the prop idea.  Any thoughts on where to find a different prop?

Looks like it will fit the motor, but might not fit through the Mirage Drive hole.

By the way... if you insist on going 24 volts, I have a MinnKota 24V EM unit for sale. What this does is gives you infinite throttle control- fwd and rev rather than the preset detents of the motor. This also significantly increases your battery run time. With a Kayak the throttle is SUPER touchy and essential for dialing in your lower trolling speeds.

Will the motor fit down through the mirage drive hole?

Well, today I hooked up the 30 lb watersnake to 24 volts.  I put a kiddie pool under the kayak and filled it with water to test the motor.  The motor has 5 forward speeds.  After the #2 forward setting, the motor started blowing all the water out of the pool.  No doubt the motor will spin faster, who knows how long though.  I really don't mind experimenting.  I always carry my pedals with me.  It may be a couple weeks before I get the boat out, but I will take some video.  The real test will be time.
