So I ask Hank, and the man says mid April to Early May.  BIG kings...

In the past, you need something on the order of 60 pounds to win their derby.  I believe most of them are caught early as Hank says....

A few pics of Kodiak Kings...

Arghh...back to work.  Can't go if I am broke...

Those are some seriously fat hogs...

Gotta keep an eye on this.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

I can...

You would battle it, net it, subdue it, then invite us over for dinner!!!!

It's just a plane ticket....c'mon!!!!

Ok Mak. Ferry schedule transition end of April. It looks like 2.5 days or 5 days of fishing.

Let's work on it to gather logistics....

Man...judging by the size of the fish, I need a bigger net and bigger stomach (to eat it of course).  I was bummed that I missed out on 2014 Kodiak trip so this trip will make up for it.  Never been to Kodiak so this would be new adventure for me.

Kayaks only!!!  Lol. It's our super duper secret, "fish in any wind"  platform!!!!

It's also heck of a lot cheaper then renting a boat or guided services!!! Lol.

So we could transport our kayaks up there too?

Yup!  The plan would be to send at least one vehicle on the ferry with kayaks.

I do want to forewarn people that this fishing will likely be 10 times slower than halibut fishing we experienced which wasn't stellar...just good.  The target for me is a single big king over 40 pounds.  Also if we opt the shorter duration route, we could easily be blown off the entire time.

I figure its a $160 bucks per person and 9 hours one way of my time.  The vehicle will be ~$400 but hoping to split that two or three ways.   If a group heads down, that also leaves options for one or two of us per vehicle to even fly down and meet the vehicle.  Lots of options.  Fortunately lots of time to plan.

In the mean time, for Homer and all other kings, I am studying up on the habits of the Phylum:Annelids,  class: Polychaete marine worms.  A major source of prey for the kings during the winter time and late fall after the sand lances thin out. The king's stomachs, especially on the Seldovia side of the Bay can be LOADED with these worms.  They tend to be green/red in color.   I wonder if they can be harvested.  I see those reality shows where they get a quarter or something each on the East coast...hmmm.....

Here's a brief mention of that but very little literature... http://nerrs.noaa.gov/doc/pdf/reserve/kba_siteprofile.pdf  Use the "find" function on the browser and look up "polychaete".  Fascinating stuff, the different species.  I think it might be a new angle on fishing these kings.  Not much information though....but that's what makes it fun!!!

I'd be down for that trip. I've caught a few of those big Kodiak kings before...but from a big boat. Getting one from a kayak would be incredible.

May schefule for ferry is still being finalized by the state. We will need to decide whether it's a 2 day fishing or longer.
