Hi Guys,
I've missed out on a lot of awesome opportunities to fish this season, though there was no place more important for me to be. Yesterday, however, the best woman I'll ever know took her last breath. My 84-year-old mother died as the result of Alzheimer's disease after eight long years. She'll return to my father's side for burial in Ohio, departing Anchorage on the Wednesday night red eye. The next week my husband and I will fly back to participate in the formalities.

This leaves a small window of opportunity. Naturally, I checked the marine forecast...

Current plans are for an early launch out of Seward on Thursday, 9/11. If the weather looks superior, I'd like to taxi out to Fox Island and maybe spend the night by the spit. All are welcome.

Let's see if I remember how to catch a fish.

My sincere condolences. I know you cared deeply and your world revolved around her care since the first day we met.  I went through a situation with my grandmother that had similarities. Crushingly sad, I'd quit fishing if I knew I could have her back in good health for even one more month. yet in my situation, it was best for all...especially my grandmother.

I hope you get a chance to fish and to have some time that is truly yours.

Kings will be waiting for you when you get back!!!

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. Me and my brother sometimes reminiscent the days when our father used to take us fishing...it was the most memorable and happy moments of our lives.  And maybe that's why we love to fish so much.  I hope you find some solace and peace...and welcome back to kayak fishing!

Your attention to detail made her transition as smooth as possible. You take away that strength and nobody can take it from you. Good luck fishing!

Thanks fellas.  I think I'll take my time about returning to a more conventional lifestyle, and think carefully about what that next thing will be. I can get lots of good thinking done while chasing down fish -- and as the news of my mother's death spreads I'm cheered and comforted by fishing and adventuring invitations that come in the guise of condolences.

My condolences for your loss Pam!  That was valuable time and some valuable lessons.  I know you learned a lot about yourself along the way.

I feel bad for the fish in your area.  With all that pent up fishing frustration, nothing swimming is safe.  ;D

Thanks Mark and Matt.

There was too much fog for me to venture out into Resurrection Bay Thursday, but I'd luckily packed a fly rod and waders just in case.  I hiked up the Russian Falls trail, fished the Paradise Pools, caught and released many beautiful rainbows as I worked my way downstream. That felt really wonderful after two very tough weeks.

With every release, I had to smile over the memory of my mother -- a very proper lady who didn't really understand my angling interests and always inquired, "But why don't you keep them?"
