Thinking about a late day trip to Nehalem today or tomorrow morning.  Anybody interested?  My roof rack has room for a second yak.  Live in SW Portland.

Made my 1st attempt yesterday on the Columbia out of Kelly Point Park.  No luck trolling or back-bouncing a wobbler, or with a Jet diver.  Only saw 1 other boat --have the salmon moved on?

Did try the Quick Release Anchor System and it worked well.  Starting to figure out how to organize my yak.

We are on the tail end of the chinook run for the Columbia and Nehalem.  They both still have coho though.  There are other coastal systems that have chinook in them now, Tillamook and Nestucca are a couple that come to mind.

I wouldn't give up on the Columbia yet for salmon. Coho are still plentiful (and will be for sometime) and there are catchable numbers of chinook available for the next couple weeks. A possible reason for the less than stellar fishing a lot of people are experiencing is that the nets were out in full force on the river the past 3 days and they really clean the system out.

If you are okay with catching cohos and still having a shot at chinook then I recommend switching to trolling spinners or cut plug herring with a UV flasher on the incoming and slack tide. Its been way more productive for me. Most of my fish have been caught in 20-40' of water and suspended 10-15' off the bottom.

Let me know if there is any other help I can offer. Would love to see you connect with one. Don't give up yet!

Thanks for the tips!  I'd love to catch either a coho or chinook.  I'll try herring and spinners next time out.  Do you use a diver to set your trolling depth or a down rigger?  I've gotta get a depth finder...

I tweaked my back this morning, hence I'm still sitting around at 11:30.

A couple of us Newbies will be fishing out there in a couple weeks trolling for strays in the bay. Im hoping the large tidal shifts in the near future will provoke some numbers. Then its just up to us to serve them what they want with perfect presentation of course :banjo:

Well ChumBucket, you did miss much today. There were a ton of fish jumping everywhere and lots of boats all over, but not a single hook-up. Listening to the other fishermen they weren't having any luck. I tried spinners, herring and Brads cut plug but nothing worked. Very frustrating to have fish jump 15 feet away but have no interest in any presentation.
