I live really close to Minter Creek and have access tot he mouth out in salt.  The Chum probably won't start really showing up for a couple more weeks but I was wondering if anyone has ever trolled for them?  When they come into the creek it is a bobber/jig affair, but sure seems like it would be fun to target them in the salt and pull something that they might hit rather than the "anchor and cast" technique.

Any ideas or experiences you would care to share?

Thanks.

That sounds fun.  Do you think the small Kokanee sized dodgers would work?  (I would love to actually go fishing with out having to go to the tackle shop first!) lol.  On a rigger or do you long line it ?

Any issues with the the kayak spooking the fish?

A kayak moving around will spook them when you creep up on them, but not bad. I'd troll it with a very small amount of weight on the line and about 20 or more feet of line out

Too small a dodger and the chum might just hit it!

Chum will also hit purple or pink colored hoochies too.  Heck, you could probably just fish like you were fishing for kokes.

Twitching jigs and rabbit fur flies with a slow sink rate will out fish trolling 10 to 1 especially in the salt near Minter

When minter is hot, its a lot of fun.  on that day we took a 2 mile paddle to get to the creek, every time after that I drug the yak down the hill and wheeled/paddled down to where the bankies couldn't get to, I would fish in 2-4 ft of water-where the power boats cant get to, then sight cast to schools.  fly fishing was my favorite way to do it,  imagine a full day of catching fish without another person in sight, just fish after fish and no one but you to catch them.  purely epic.  schools swimming on both sides and all around and under you.  no need to troll, no need to leave the inlet.  at high tide you can paddle back to the road

Minter is 2 miles from my home.  I get down there a couple of times and in the Yak you do have the place to yourself.  It can be a lot of fun when they are in.  I am wanting to try and get them silver while they are stacked up waiting for the signal to come in.  I appreciate all the tips and advice hopefully I will get my son-in-laws gopro and do a video.  I will certainly post up the report.

Thinking about chum made me remember that there is a chum run that actually comes into Gig Harbor. (Crescent Creek/Donkey Creek).  I wonder if there is enough of them to target them in the harbor itself.  Talk about easy launch and probably no fishing pressure.  Hmmmmm.  Something to investigate.   Anyone  ever target them there?

Where did you launch?  Closest (public-accessible) spot I can find is up at Purdy Spit at the boat ramp there.  I have looked at Minter Creek just for my 'yak exploring days, but haven't felt the urge to go that far yet...

right at the hatchery.  gotta go down a short steep hill.  at low tide its a long slog through the mud, just be polite and stay out of peoples way, doesn't take too long to get to the water.  I would start at low tide and fish to high tide, you can paddle all the way back to the road at high tide. When Nate and I went we started at the launch on the spit, then got caught in some nasty weather on the way back, in the dark.  luckily the wind was at our back so it went quick.  the slog through the mud was worth it to me.

Thanks :)  i saw a couple of youtube "combat fishing" clips of the spot, looked like right at a bridge so probably the place...  I suppose if I timed the tides right I could launch at the Purdy ramp, ride the tides a couple miles, fish a while, and ride the incoming back up to Purdy.
