I was checking to see if Sunset Bay is open for crabbing during the ocean closure, one ODFW office says yes but I was a bit uncomfortable with where the bay starts and ends so after many calls I learned it is not a bay.
ODFW Charleston gave me the final answer, it is closed with the ocean.

Any thoughts on crabbing the bays where there are not a lot of power boats, the truck is all filled and ready to go? I do hit the Columbia South jetty often  but I was thinking further south. PM me if you would like.

By the way I use 18 inch square cages called "little crabber" (size does matter) fit the Hobie great.

If you don't mind me asking where did you get the traps?

Thanks in advance,

Roger

The lower Umpqua river down by the beginning of the jetty (also known as half moon bay) nice little beach to launch from and about 40 yards from the road. You also got the triangle off the south jetty which is really good for crab in the winter.

I went crabbing yesterday just off of Pt. Adams in my Revo13. It was my first kayak crabbing trip and I'm not sure why I haven't done it sooner. I managed to haul up 8 dungeness and 4 red rock in a couple of hours. There wasn't a lot of boat traffic, that is the nice thing about this spot. There is some good fishing near by to pass the time between checking gear. Charleston is full of majesty and wonder! If you ever make it down this way, give me a pm. I'd be more than happy to show you around.

That Triangle looks interesting, where do you access that?

The triangle access is real simply. Once your at half moon bay take the gravel road, parking for half moon bay is about 40 ft. off the main road aka the gravel road drive down the gravel road not sure how far but look for a road with a fence on the bay side (think there is a government sign saying no trespassing). Go through there and you'll see the jetty and at the end of the road there is the Coast Guard tower park at the end and I think its about75-90 yards to the beach inside the triangle. The second way is to drive all the way down the gravel road.50 yards from the end is a sand road (might have tractor tire print on it or a orange tractor with the oyster boat coming or going out of it). That way is about 100 yards from the gravel road. The oyster people don't mind you being in there to fish and crab as long as you don't bother their gear. When you want crab in the winter thats the place to go. no high water, no mud colored water and the salinity stays the same year round hence the oyster beds.

I gotta check that place out for free diving.

Paul, I have done a number of dives in the triangle. There weren't a lot of fish. Mostly small stuff. I did have fun snorkeling around the rocks and finding the biggest red rock crabs I've ever seen!
