I found an inexpensive motel just a couple of miles from the launch. Just made reservations for the 13th and 14th. Just $62 a night, and the reviews were very positive!

I believe that is while they are underway isn't it?  It would be impossible to be on the lower Willamette without being within 100 yards of a commercial shipping vessel.

Little Cos and I will be attending the Sturgeon Sleigh Ride!

A question:  In some of the posts, there is mention of pickled squid, herring, shad, etc. I haven't done any pickling of these for sturgeon before.  Any recipe recommendations?  Is it necessary?  Or just goose up everything with some stinky scent?

Thanks.

Pickling is just another way or preserving it. If you have the raw fish that'll work just as well. The stinkier the better for sturgeon.

I have a ton of respect for USP's fishing advice (believe me, the dude knows his stuff) but I'll throw in a dissenting opinion: I have caught sturgeon on a lot of different baits, but I have always had the best luck with the freshest bait. Live sandshrimp and freshly dead fish (smelt, shad, herring) are my favorite baits. From there I go towards frozen baits and start using some scent to (hopefully) cover up any freezer burn or processing scents.

Again, just my two cents, and what works best in one situation for one person may not work in another situation at all. The cool part is with so many people showing up we should be able to dial in what they're in the mood for and where they are pretty quickly. :)

This is just down the ridge from me, but a bad shoulder will be keeping me from participating. But I may try and get down to the launch just to see everybody off. Sounds like a great time!

Sounds like a great time and just up my alley. (I love to catch sturgeon!). But alas, I will not be able to attend. Count me in for next year.

I need to cycle some bait out of my freezer, so if anyone needs it I am going to bring a bunch of odds and ends that I'm happy to share. I will probably have squid, herring, prawns, smelt, etc.

If you run out of bait on the water come find me - red Hobie Oasis tandem with too many rods sticking out of the crate, unless I sell it before then, in which case it will be a red Tarpon 120 with too many rods sticking out of the crate.

I'm going to try salmon eggs that I forgot to cure up. They were hidden in the back of the fridge. It wasn't until the fridge took on an unpleasant odor that I realized that I forgot about them. Oops  :-X

I have lots of accidental sturgeon during summer and fall while salmon fishing with eggs.would be fun to see if it is worth trying.

I have used cured eggs for sturgeon before and it worked fine.  I'm still trying to make this event.

Just wondering if these current wind and rain will have any effect on sturgeon fishing Sunday.

I doubt it .... but.......... any thoughts ?
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Forecast is looking good to me... dry and a bit of wind, but you're really well protected down in the basin. Everyone has their own opinion on the rain, but I like rising creeks when I'm sturgeon fishing... it pushes food down to them and puts them in the mood (that's my theory anyway).

Last year on the awesome day David and I had the Willie had just blown and it was relatively warm. This weekend is shaping up with the same scenario so I hope history repeats itself.

The wind forecast change is a real bummer. The good thing is it is an east wind and the outer basin where I tend to have my best luck is fairly protected from the east wind. It will just make for a crappy paddle/peddle back to the ramp.
