Yeah, Jammer wasn't really looking back to time the incoming waves that day.

What he was doing was watching me go for a swim.  We started in at the same time that day, and I chose to mosey in with the paddle, and Jammer went for broke with the Mirage drive.  I found some rogue wave out past the normal breakers that literally came out of nowhere and took me by surprised.  No harm done after bobbing around out there for about 5-10 mins as my kayak went to shore without me.

BTW.. I hate that damn helmet I had on.  It kept tipping forward and I couldn't see anything.  Got me a new helmet now!

That bow plunge just gave me flashbacks!

Whoever designed that flag whip-pole deserves a raise. It's indestructible. 8)

That exact scenario happened to me last year. My rudder control/stow line got wrapped up in some trebles hooks in the compartment below me. I was messing around with it far from shore and random breaker far out nailed me. It wasn't very fun and like you all I wanted was a cold beer afterwards.

The flag is just a fiberglass ATV flag whip.  It really can take a beating.

I've surf landed several different kayaks, and the revo 13 is by far the worst.  The nose wants to dive under every time.  Maybe sitting in the very back would help!  Sitting in the back seat of an oasis is pretty easy to land, specially if the front seat has a lighter person in it.

Definitely no shame in going backwards. Another thing to do is, once you land, unload your kayak and then go back out and practice. That way you don't have the pressure of potentially losing or breaking stuff.

Our obsession about "sticking"surf landings is kind of strange though.  Seems like there are elements of pride involved. Which adds to the pressure. Which for me anyway, detracts from enjoyment. I just assume I'm gonna dump, and embrace it! :) i don't find surf landing situations to be that dangerous. That is, unless you're out in conditions you shouldn't be. In which case you're screwed no matter what! :)

I always assume I'm gonna dump too, it's just fun to get a good landing in.

+1 One of the best posts on surf landings I've ever read.

That is the best thing you can do.

 Thanks for the clarification Craig....

Have to agree with Rory and Lee when it comes to getting dumped. Figure it's gonna happen and enjoy the ride. If you stick it------ awesome------ if not....try to keep the damage at a minimum.
I'm getting anxious to get out there too.
Life is short---live it tall.
