while doing some rigging i picked up two diff sets of milk-crates - x-large and the reg square ones. i don't need the x-large one.

It's blue, and the same height/width, but maybe 25% longer than regular square crate. i pre-cut the bottom off another one w/ a dremel, and it fits perfectly on top. Just ziptie or weave some paracord on the back for a hinged lid. I left some "lip" on it, too, so you can safely lay some items on there while on the water.

Oddly enough I found milk-crates pretty difficult to locate. It seems stores have moved away from traditional ones to collapsible crates. So, if you need a milkcrate and don't want to creep around the back of Fred Meyers/QFC/Safeway, come by my place in Queen Anne and pick it up.

This is a good find - matching lid and crate. I really wish my boats handled the long format because I highly prefer it; you can fit a lot more in (important when you have two people and layers of gear on).

Not to undercut this at all, but just FYI: my local Home Depot started carrying actual quality milk crates (not those cheapo ones from Fred Meyer that cut your hands) in black color for about $8 each (new). Another option is Amazon.
