new reel which has a smooth spool, i want as much braid as i can get so no mono backing....do i put a piece of electrical tape or duct tape or sporttape? ( to keep line from spinninng on spool later fishing?) first? then fill it up or tie and tape knot?

do i dunk spool of line in water to put on reel as tight as possible? or just fill it up with tension from my fingers as i am reeling up?

I asked at Ted's.They say electricians tape on the spool as well as make sure line goes on tight.

I typically put a wrap or 2 or electrical tape on the spool and use my fingers or run the line through a phone book to keep it tight.

I usually tie the line on tight over one wrap of electrical tape . I follow that with one wrap of electrical tape over the line. I figure that it locks it in place.  Extra insurance if you will.

I usually wrap the line twice around PVC pipe to place tension on the line as I spool it on.

Just curious: since it only takes one or two wraps of mono around the spool - 6 to 10 feet at most - why is that an issue?

I usually put 20 or 30 yards of mono on a spool, even if it's brad-ready thinking that if I get spooled, I want a little springiness to protect the rod.  That's not a recommendation, that's just me being obsessive...

I use tape or put a few wraps on then tie it off.

Whatever tape you use, make sure it doesn't absorb water. There is no need to dunk the spool with braid.

Wow! A phone book, huh? I haven't got one in years. Can I just go to Whitepages.com on my laptop and run the braid through the closed laptop as a substitute?  8)

I'm sure you have a few Harry Potter books to use instead of phonebooks  >:D

I buy line when fisherman's has a sale. Cheaper, and most of their guys are able to pack it on perfectly. They normally use black tape, but I ask them to back it with mono or even Dacron to use up space on larger reels.
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

ollie damons told me that when a machine puts line on that the reels gears are not meant to run or turn as fast as machine loads up line and can do damage. it`s why i put line on myself now.
i ended up using one wrap of electrical tape, tied line, put small piece of tape on tie and reeled er up.

I find that hard to believe as a total blanket statement. The most expensive reels get filled by machine and I have never heard of a reel being damaged.

call ollie`s,  no reason they would not tell u same thing as they told me. they said if u do have them spooled at the stores that u ask them to do it slow. instead of doing that i`ll just spool my own and not take any chances. i never heard of reel getting damaged either til i took a reel in to ollies and they said damage was due to getting spooled too fast. i dunno, call ollie`s.
