I'm new to this and trying to gear up for fishing Pacific City and other locations as a nut up after much more practice.  What size rod, reel and line weight do I want to use?  Braid or mono, bait cast or spinning?  Length a rod brand?

You can catch fish out there with about anything you already have - I think bluewrx2 has just about switched over to a Barbie pole full time - but here is what I use most of the time fishing for lings:

7'6" Field&Stream back bouncer rod (a fairly stiff rod)
Abu Garcia 6501 C3 reel spooled with 50# braid and 30# mono leader
Lead jigheads in the 2 - 6 ounce range w/ plastic bodies - Lancers and Big Hammers are popular
a small squid body tied about 30" above the jig and a shrimp fly about 30" above that

I am am by no means the most successful fisherman at PC or Depoe or Sunset Bay, but I haven't gotten skunked either. What I am using is pretty standard gear out there. A medium spinning outfit with some curlytail jigs is useful for casting around the kelp beds or jigging for suspended schools of rockfish, too.

Like most fishing questions you ask,you will get a million answers ;D.some guys like salmon rods others like shorter jigging sticks.

Since It sounds like your gearing up for salmon in your other posts I would just use what you got and go from there.any salmon sized reel is just fine.you will only be fishing 20-80 ft for most all the fishing there.

Casting and spinning are both fine.again use what you got (within reason).casting is more compact and its easier to leash your rod though. No handle and bail spinning around to wrap up.I use 100% braid 65 lb spider wire with  a swivel and leader.no stretch in the braid means hard hook sets and you feel everything better. I used to use 40lb leader but I have dropped to 20lb with no issues but I do carry 20,30,40 pre tied leaders in a leader wallet with swivels already tied on.less to worry bout on the water.

The lure department is endless.

Ask insayn about socktopus  :spittake: you can damn near use a fork with a hook in it to catch bottom fish, dump shrimp oil a cotton ball and a hook will eventually land ya a fish, flat spoons, any shrimp flys, even night crawlers or any rubber grubs but for the most bang for your buck LANCER JIGS I am not affiliated or associated in any way with them but "that shit catches fish"  I swear to the fishing gods  :banjo:

Sherman pretty much nailed it. Other gear to think about is drysuit/wetsuit/waders/drytop, lip grippers, stringer/game clip, and VHF radio.

Thanks for the feedback, the dry suit is back ordered and should get it the first week a March. I have also been looking at the flags and radios.

If you carry multiple poles you can use one as a flag pole and if necessary you got a back up pole.

Since the radio issue was brought up what are recommendations you have?

Standard horizon units are solid. Either the HX 280 or 290 are good units you can get for around 100 buck. You can actually find the HX851 on Amazon now for around 140. It offers a bit more power and DSC/GPS for your radio.

You could make a real high end flag like mine.  Requires a bamboo pole and a piece of colorful cloth.  Wrap some foam around the end and jam it into a rod holder pointing straight up.

I'm even higher-end than Kyle. I secure my flag w/ some velcro to the tip of the unused-at-the-moment fishing rod in my milkcrate.

Or you can use an old un-loved rod as a flag pole - like a $20 made-for-Wal-Mart Ugly Stik.  They already have a foam handle that fits most scuppers.
The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.
