I was just thinking about a pedal drive kayak replacement, which doesnt inhibit your movement through shallow water (like mirage and propel).

The idea:
A jet propulsion kayak which intakes water on one pedal stroke and then pushes it out on the other stroke moving you forward. Not sure how efficient it would be, but I can get a decent amount of force using a hand held bilge pump.

Just thought i would share that.

Wouldn't you want a bicycle-like pedaling system so the impeller was always turning?  It seems to me that a setup like you described would give you pulses.

I like the idea.
The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.

A bicycle type drive would work better. Now if I had a couple hundred thousand for R&D I'd be golden.

Interesting idea, but I wonder how many RPM  the pump needs for controllable  use?

Could have multiple impellers which go into smaller diameter exhaust tubing which increases the force?  ???

I have little to no expertise in hydro-propulsion/dynamics. Just thought it was a neat idear.

I also have no expertise in hydro-propulsion/dynamics.  But I was under the impression that jet boats use a lot more gas than motor boats with propellers, which suggests that jet propulsion systems are less efficient than propeller systems.  If jet propulsion systems were more efficient than propeller systems, I would expect that a much larger percentage of boats and ships would utilize jet propulsion systems rather than propeller systems.

Correct, I once had a jet pump on a PB and the rated HP was 30% less than the equivalent prop drive for the motor.

A couple of years ago there was some posts about a jet drive surfboard being developed somewhere in Cali.  I wonder whatever became of it?  Looked like it could be adaptable for kayaks at the time.

Just put a turbo on it that will solve any propulsion problem  ;)

I think that would be all kinds of fun. I can only imagine the possibilities. How cool.
Definitely not "human powered". That would be some serious peddling.

Wonder how well it'll troll down ???
  Time for a little research......
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent
