I finally had a chance to take my kayak out after a couple of months off.  Turns out I really like fishing out of my kayak!  It'd been so long that the stoke had faded and tarnished.  Gotta remember to not go so long again!

I'm feeling the same way; time to get out.

I sometimes wonder how long the lull period is before I have to change my verbiage to I "used to" fish from a kayak.

My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

I live in Montana.  The last time I had my kayak out was on November 28, when I hauled it out on 5 inches of ice to take some joke pictures while ice fishing.  Since that date, I've been ice fishing.  While I envy those who live in the Pacific Northwest and can kayak fish all year long, forced abstinence from kayak fishing during the winter probably makes me appreciate kayak fishing more.  I'm certainly looking forward to the ice melting off the lakes in another month and a half to two months so I can dust off my kayak and get it in the water.

Actually, the kayak fishing situation is not totally hopeless, as Flathead Lake is mostly free of ice all winter. So if I really want to go kayak fishing, I can wait for a warm day and head up there.

And the ice on lakes isn't keeping me from fishing.  Here are some smoked kokanee, trout, and mountain whitefish which I caught through the ice.

Pete that's too damn funny I want to hit your neck off the woods in the future to fish with you ( not in the winter my boats too heavy for the ice) and maybe even do some roadside bumper hunting  ;D

Come on out.  I'll show you a good time, and can probably get you into some nice roadkill, but I can't guaranty that I'll show you any fish.  Check the ice condition before you head out!

One reason I've been following this forum is that I'm getting an urge to do some ocean fishing in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.  I'm trying to get somewhat educated about your fishing opportunities.  I've done kayak surfing in a whitewater kayak, but have never launched a fishing kayak through surf.  And I don't know anything about tides and ocean wave conditions.

I couldn't agree more. I've finally come to terms with the fact that I am happier pursuing any fish from my kayak than I am catching one from the bank or powerboat no matter the species. In short I get more kicks out a kokanee on a kayak than a big steelhead from the bank.

My kayaks are nothing short of a temple for me. I go there to energize my spirit. Even on days without fish I get to enjoy the serenity of the PNW's natural beauty away from the bank and without motor noise or exhaust. Its the best kind of addiction to have.

Nice, get more kicks.

I made a conscious effort to not use my kayak for fishing this winter and to try some new rivers.  It was great and reminded me why I started fishing, but getting out on the ocean on Sunday felt like coming home after a long trip.

If you want to go on the most amazing saltwater fishing trip of your life book a spot with Howard McKim of Ketchikan Kayak Co. on his remote fishing trip.
5 days of the best saltwater bottom fishing I have ever experienced!

Is Howard offering fishing trips again?  Last time I talked to him, he'd stopped doing the supported multi-day trips.  It'd be awesome if he was doing that again!

Aint that the truth.  It's funny how distance increases the yerning but decreases the visceral stoke.  Luckily, it takes just one good day to remind you of why you've dedicated so much time to the pursuit.

He has it listed back on his website. With a float plane transport instead of a water taxi.
I haven't spoken to him about the details yet since it is not in the cards for me this year but I would love to return!
