Anyone have any experience with the Sony HDR-AS100 action cam or other Sony action cameras for that matter?

It's currently the "deal of the day" on Amazon.

Normal list price $299.99... today's price $149.99 + free shipping

It seems to have...

XAVC: 1080/60p (slightly higher bitrate over MP4)
MP4: 1080/60p
MP4: 720/120p
MP4: 480/240p
and all the lower quality options..

stereo sound
image stabilization
Wi-fi
GPS
splashproof (waterproof w/ included case)

I have a few friends that own the Sony HDRAS20 action cam and they are very happy with them.

That's an awesome deal.

I've done some review hunting and it appears that this is better than the GoPro Hero 3+ but not the new GoPro 4's.  Compared to the bargain $129 GoPro Hero it doesn't appear to be a contest.

There is also a version with the "Live View Remote" LCD watch thingy for about $70 more.
And there is an infrared receiver so I think a regular remote (non-wifi) is an option.

Pros:
The image stabilization works well but cuts the field of view from 170 deg to 120 deg
It does as well as the Hero 4s in low light
The audio is better than GoPros
Battery life without wi-fi/gps is 2 hrs+

Cons:
The underwater housing has a domed lens (which causes focus problems underwater) and is only good to about 16 ft.  For about $40 you can get the improved case with a flat lens which does better on focusing and is good to 150 ft or so.
Time lapse uses video mode shots rather than camera mode (hi MP shots)
No 4k video mode (but I don't have the computer or the IMAX theater for that anyway)

Anyway, my wife loves a good bargain and I was able to leverage the savings to get purchase approval.  Maybe I'll do my own review soon.  Amazon prime should get it to me by Friday.

I order one also, thank you for posting this.  Another "Pro" is that the battery is removable so you can have extras all charged up and ready for extended times out.  Also, I was told that editing software is free.

You'll have to post a review after you've had a chance to play a bit. I'm looking at non-GoPro cams right now. I lost my 2 in the sounds last year, and would like to get a second cam for sub $200. I've been hearing good things about the Garmin Virb too.

I saw that yesterday too and almost pulled the trigger, but I still have two GoPros I need to loose first.

Should we hold our collective breath on that happening this season ??? ::) ???
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

I should have picked up one and given it to Langston. It would make a pretty good race to see who lost one first...

He actually bought two go pros but it seems the really good stuff only seems to happen when you and I are there :) either that or he forgets to charge the batteries :)

I thought I had it going while I was getting chased by a sea lion in Mexico but I forgot to put the card in.

And I was too far behind to see get it on mine.  I would have been able to document the blood slick if it would have caught him, though. Merbear vs. Sea Lion.  What a great nature documentary that would have been.

Today's Amazon price is down to $199.   Not quite the $149 I paid, but still a great deal.
