Bsteves and the OR crew have done a really great job at getting together a safety seminar so would like to offer the same to the Seattle crew. If there's a enough interest I think it can be really informative. If you're interested please reply and we can go about getting a date and location set up.

Good to hear a little bit of a response. I know there's more of us out there so let's get this going. Newbs, this is your time to make that learning curve nice and steep! ;)

Z & all,

I don't have any idea what info is passed along by the guys in Oregon, but it sounds like it would (or should) be of interest at least to beginners.  Speaking of classes, I can't recommend this one enough for ANY of you guys that plan to spend time on the salty bits of Washington's water:  http://www.washingtonkayakclub.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=234&Itemid=52

I did that one right after I purchased my first sit on top and it was just what I was hoping for.  It's geared (naturally) towards the sit inside people, but the instructors had no problem with my SOT and a few of them actually thought it was a cool, safe approach to kayaking.  Of course the wet entry is a small part of the class (it's a breeze for any body taking the class in a SOT) and they'll let you try the eskimo roll too, but those were just a very small part of a really skill and fact packed weekend.  A lot of attention is paid to the fact that in our part of the world, the water is ALWAYS cold.

Whether NWKA pulls off a class or not, like I said above, I can't recommend enough that each of you take a class like this one.  It cost me about $125 for a 3 day, two night weekend.  I think that expense was totally to cover your food and rent of the barracks from the state park.  I'm pretty sure that the instruction was not paid for, but it was really good stuff as far as I could see.  It comes up in June next year.  Give it some thought.

If at first you don't succeed....  maybe skydiving is just not for you.

Fishin T  thanks for that connection.  That is the kind of class every kayaker should take.  There is paddling around and mostly that is safe as can be --but if you haven't taken the time to learn the kind of special skills necessary for extreme conditions-- then you are a fatality waiting to happen.  That may seem a little melodramatic--just finished watching an extreme skiing movie-- "Steep"--guys skiing slopes over 50 degrees.  The point these guys make is that the mountain (or ocean) can be friendly one day then mean as can be the next--your survival can depend on your skill set.
Don't put off taking a safety class if you have the opportunity, and if you've taken a basic class then take an advanced class - you could be the one to save someone elses life or maybe just your own--your wife or kids will appreciate it.

Nice link T. Sounds like a fun class.

What we will be offering is some fundamental SOT kayak safety techniques (ex. self-rescue) as well as some specific to kayak fishing (ex. removing a hook if accidentally impaled). There will be some talk about setting up your yak and of course a Q&A on all things kayak fishing.

It's been a bit and not too many replies. Does that mean not many people interested in a kayak fishing safety class?

When??

Haven't quite gotten to that part yet. Still trying to gauge interest and figure out who's interested.
