You guys know how to throw a party! :occasion14: For anyone who needs to learn this fishery, these guys have killed some fish in their day and are good guys as well.

And I'll say this for the 1,000th time. I wish Portland was closer.

Ok this sounds great guys. One question, can I bring my mom? We plan on going out on the 20th for her first time in a kayak so this is perfect timing. Oat soda..?

I'm looking forward to it.  Just curious, will you guys cover anchoring etiquette for joining hog-lines?  It's just something I've avoided because I don't want to get out there and make an ass out of myself.

I don't really have any experience to speak about catching springers while on anchor, but the methods are essentially the same thing as catching fall fish on anchor from what I gather. I'll provide some info about getting setup for anchor fishing for salmon.

I've done a fair bit of kayak and powerboat anchor fishing for springers. The etiquette is fairly simple. Don't cross your anchor line over another boat's anchor line and you'll be fine. Crossing anchor lines is a serious issue for a kayak angler because of our low mass. If you've crossed an anchor line and that boat picks up and moves at a minimum its going to drag you upstream and more than likely its going to flip you. Worst case scenario is you get tangled in the line so if you are going to anchor fish for springers have a good safety knife on your body because the spring flows on the outgoing tide on the Columbia/Willamette are no joke.  Other than that most of it is common sense. You want to be in line with everyone else so if you or they hook a fish you won't get tangled in their gear. Along the same line use at least 30 lb mono on your leader so you crank the drag down to prevent the same issue.

I usually try to be the first there to set the line and if I'm not I'll take the inside or outside of the hogline to reduce any potential problems. When someone is dropping anchor above me I decouple the anchor line from the kayak and hold it in my hand just in case they tangle with me I can just let go and not get dragged under. An additional item to consider is that pulling your anchor can be challenging to impossible  from a paddle kayak at the bottom of the outgoing tide.

Other than that the lures and configurations (wrapped kwikfish or maglips) are essentially the same you would run from a powerboat.

It's actually not that bad from a paddle yak at the bottom end as you get a good assist in pooping your anchor out.  You just have to paddle upstream, past your anchor and then pop it as you float back down.  This can be tricky if there's a lot of wind.

One of these days I'll get a paddle only techniques seminar scheduled.....  ::)

I look forward to seeing y'all there!  Anybody want an On-The-Water follow-up again this year?

Bummed I'm going to miss my first salmon clinic since joining up a few years ago.  For those who have not attended previously - these events are a great way to learn some secrets from some successful kayak salmon anglers!

Would definitely be interested in the on the water follow-up...
