bait

I grew up in Oregon but live in Vermont now.  My daughter says I should use sardines for bait  so can eat them if I dont catch anything.  Will sardines work as bait?

Not from a can,  they'll fall apart too fast.  Anchovies or herring are good choices

   Use something more universal
                                               like worms....
