You could actually do a test overnight trip on the lower John day.  there is a campground only available by boat about 2 miles from the mouth.

Good call. From Le Page park to Albert Phillipi Park would be a good overnighter. That said it felt like a lot more than 2 miles to me the last time I did it. I'd say 3.5 river miles. I don't think I have that GPS track anymore. I'll check it on Google Earth sometime.

Thanks for the link,I'd seen that before and it's part of the reason I want to do this float. I'm thinking of doing the Thirtymile to Cottonwood this time around...hopefully

The guys at Thirty Mile are very helpful.  They'll even shuttle your car to the takeout so it's waiting for you when you take out.

You need to do the trip before July, and even earlier depending on the flows.  Around that time the water just gets too low and you'll find yourself doing a lot of dragging.
