Anyone up for fishing around the Eugene area next week? Thinking of going Monday, if the weather is "good". Haven't fished in Oregon yet (I've lived here for about 3 months now, and for a about 8 months in 2013). I'm probably bettered gear for bass, but have caught a few trout. Any tips on where to head out to or if someone else is going and wouldn't mind me tagging along that'd be great too. Thanks for any help.

Dawg, it is probably early for crappie, but there are bass to be had at Fern Ridge Reservoir. Loon Lake offers multiple species and a nice drive if you don't mind heading toward Reedsport.

Cottage Grove or Dorena Lake. There are Mercury warnings, but the fishing has been great for both Bass and Trout.

I don't have monday off but I will definitely go out if we line up some days off! I haven't fished much of eugene yet besides steelhead and salmon on siuslaw and I tried the mckenzie and middle fork willamette a few times. Kokanee at green peter is fun. Have to do it early in the season (now) before the start going to deep. Trout in green peter too and I guess there is bass, but I've never fished for them there. Im definitely planning on exploring the eugene waters more since ive lived in salem my whole life until recently.

Jason,

Anytime you feel like fishing, let me know. I'm free pretty much everyday. I'm in school....but not until the fall (so I'm off all spring/summer). I'm somewhat new to the area, but have fished for bass most my life. My weekends get kinda slammed (kids in soccer eat up a lot of my fishing time) but can break away some too. I'm just thankful my wife understands the obsession!!

Well, not fishing on Monday. The VA finally decided to call and see me. So, guess I'll be doing that all day now. Hopefully I can get on the water soon.

Sorry to hear you'll need to postpone.  Thank you for your service.  I hope all goes well at the VA.
The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.

Thanks Tinker. Yeah I've been waiting to hear from them for about 6 months now, so I'll have to postpone the fishing for this one. But I did catch a little break between kids activities (soccer, baseball, birthday parties and everything else they have going on) to hit the little pond by Fern Ridge (kirks pond). Took both my boys out (they weren't happy w/ left the kayak at home). We got there about 1930 and fished until 2100, caught 7 smallies (all very small) and two crappie (one decent and the other small). It was a blast watching my kids catching fish, and yes they were right, if we'd have brought the kayak we would've been on top of bigget fish. We could see the bigger ones hitting in some different spots.

So, the VA called and canceled my appointment (go figure) at around 1000. I picked my youngest son up from school and asked what he wanted to do? His answer, "dad let's go fishing!!". We hurried home, grabbed lunch and loaded up the Big Tuna. Grabbed a couple of rods and we were off. Made a quick stop at the fern ridge market store (They've got awesome worms) and picked up worms and gatorade (you can't got fishing w/o gatorade....according to my kids). I knew it would be a quick trip, as my wife threatened me that if I wasn't home in time to coach soccer for my oldest, she along w/ all the other parents would kill me. We got on the water fairly quickly (it takes a little while to get everything organized and ready when you have a 5 yr old with you, then factor in that he is also a Type 1 Diabetic just adds to "do we have everything we need" factor. Anyways, we paddle around for a few minutes I make a few cast seeing whats biting and take a huge strike. I swing for the fences and strike out. I'm a little bummed and my sidekick is not helping "dad, how can you miss that BIG fish?" Thanks kid. Now he's getting bored and flopping his hand around in the water. So, we anchor down. I rig him up w/ a cork and worm. He cast out and as I turn around to grab my rod, I hear "dad, I got one, I GOT ONE!!!". Naturally, i'm thinking yeah right kid, its been out there for 3 seconds. As I turn around to tell him to stop playing, his little ultra light rod is bent over and he's cranking down on it. It was the only fish caught and he's been rubbing it in since we got home. And yes, he was the first one this year to put a fish in the kayak. He hasn't been able to stop smiling yet.

Yep!! I'm just thrilled that he loves the outdoors as much as I did when I was a kid. I wish we could make it up there this weekend, but soccer and classes are not allowing that to happen. So, I hope everyone has fun and stays safe. Good luck to all of you.
